Why jeans have a small pocket: another theory
This pocket was originally designed for a Zippo lighter. Its original size was exactly the same. That is, not very deep and wide enough for her. Since most cowboys used Zippo, Levis decided to fit the size of this pocket to one standard.
Now everything has changed, and jeans are sewn taking into account other sizes. Now this pocket is adjusted to the size of the cricket - because according to statistics, this is the lighter most people use.
As for this theory, Foto-elf magazine notes that it cannot be true since the first zippo lighter was released only in 1933, and the fifth pocket appeared on jeans back in 1873.
Despite the simplicity and conciseness, in men's clothing there are a lot of different details. Some of them, like , solve practical problems. Metal rivets on jeans belong to the second type - we are used to not noticing them and writing off their presence as decoration, but once upon a time they served some very specific purpose. In 1853, a native of Bavaria, Levi Strauss, began to produce overalls for American gold prospectors and miners from thick canvas, which is used to make tents and awnings. When Levi Strauss ran out of handkerchief canvas, he switched to a softer blue twill from the French town. Nima (de Nimes - hence, apparently, the name "denim" came from). However, it turned out to be not so strong, and under the weight of gold nuggets and a working tool, the pockets of the trousers were quickly torn. It was not possible to solve this problem for 20 years, until in 1872 (according to other sources - in 1870) a way out was found by a tailor from Nevada, Jacob Davis. He installed copper rivets in weak places for attaching horse harness, which significantly extended the life of the pants. Davis wanted to patent his invention, but was unable to raise the $68 for the patent, so he approached Levi Strauss with an offer to take on half of the cost of the patent.
So on May 20, 1873, Strauss and Davis patented the right to produce trousers with rivets on the codpiece and pockets, and in the first year they sold 21,000 pairs of jackets and jeans. However, the riveting on the codpiece did not last long: in 1941 it was removed on the personal order of the company's president, Walter Haas: one day, sitting by the fire, he burned himself with a hot riveting. And in 1944, the rivets disappeared from the back pockets of the 501st model. According to legend, this was done because the rivets scratched furniture, saddles and left bruises on the ass. In the same year, the rivets from the “fifth pocket” also disappeared. However, already in the 1947 model, they returned to their place, which cannot be said about the rivets on the back pockets - from 1944 to the present, Levi's uses a 42-stitch zigzag seam to fasten them. Even the Japanese, who are fanatical about their retro models, are replacing rivets with a strong double "chain" stitch - so, apparently, they interfere with sitting.
However, not all brands remove them from the back pockets - you can easily find a pair of jeans with sewn into the fabric or flat metal rivets that do not create discomfort when worn. Although, we repeat, today, when the need to carry kilogram gold bars in the pockets of trousers has disappeared, it makes sense to consider rivets solely as a decorative element.
