Casio g shock metal watch. Dreams Come True: Steel G-Shock

Hello community!
I have long dreamed of having wrist watch. After strangling the toad, the choice fell on a metal version.

In this model, very large numbers of hours and minutes and the absence of "extra" bells and whistles on the dial were bribed.

Just want to give a few explanations on the characteristics. Weight is incorrect. The watch weighs 145 grams. After removing 4 links of the bracelet (fitted it under my arm), the mass decreased to 127. Also in Russia, time calibration via the radio channel does not work (in the watch, the receiver is designed only for the transmitter of the American tower, which is located in Fort Collins). I found out about the transmitter after receiving the watch - well, it's my own fault - I had to google deeper.
There are no complaints about other functions. Alarms work, backlight, stopwatch the same. Time Recorder - has not yet figured out what it is for.

A few words about delivery. She took 4 weeks. The seller did not provide a track number, sending the watch by regular mail. Although it does warn in its description that it can ship with tracking for an additional $11.50.
The parcel is cardboard box in which lay the invoice and the packaging of the watch, sealed with crumpled newspaper. The box was not damaged during the trip, the customs did not open it.

Watch weight ~0.320lbs (145g)

Now for the pros and cons:
+ G-Shock;
+ large numbers of hours and minutes;
+ metal;
+ no batteries;
+ very comfortable and secure clasp;
+ no "extra" donuts on the dial;
- after all, metal is not entirely (fastening the bracelet to the watch through a plastic part);
- radio synchronization in Russia does not work;
- chrome-plated dial bezel and button G (in the photo of the seller they are matte).

Summarizing the above, I want to say that I liked the watch. On the hand, I do not feel them, despite the decent weight. Hair does not pinch. The buttons are pressed with little effort.

If you like the pleasant heaviness and coolness of metal on your hand, then the GIEZ sub-series is definitely worth a try.

As the popularity of G-Shocks increased, the line of models produced grew. Growth was both in terms of the number of models sold in pieces, and in terms of assortment. Protected digital-analog models appeared, “nominal” models began to stand out - those that in the future will become a sub-series PROFESSIONAL or Master Of G( ,etc) . The range of prices also steadily increased.

And according to the laws of the marketing genre, additional sub-series were bound to appear, significantly different from the main general line. Both for the sake of additional profit, and for PR of the brand + to analyze development prospects.

In strict accordance with the name (which stands for Metal-Twisted) - the body was a sandwich of metal and plastic.

And the basis of the series is metal. It's no secret that fairly quickly ordinary G-SHOCKs (with rare exceptions - see for example) switched to a plastic construction. The strength of the original, made in a metal case with a screw cap, additionally enclosed in plastic armor, turned out to be even excessive for testing. And very soon his heirs lost that same metal case. Only the cover plate remained, attached to the plastic with 4 bolts.

But not everyone liked it. And for those who wanted "heavier" - metal cases were revived in the . Alas, despite the incredible level of noise created by lovers of metal and screw caps in the network, the real demand did not live up to expectations, and this series is in an almost half-dead state. But the watch is something else you can get. And the watch is great.

Therefore, I am glad to introduce today's hero - GS-1050.

To be precise, two heroes. Brothers GS-1050-1A and GS-1050b-5A

This model was produced in 2 variants of different colors.

GS-1050b-5A - Bronze-coloured steel with a sober black and white dial and blued buckle

GS-1050-1A - uncoated steel, brighter dial with red accents.

The body is a steel cylinder. The lid, as it should be, is screwed.

With protection, everything is natural in a peculiar way. On the one hand, metal is certainly stronger than plastic. But on the other hand, firstly, it loses its marketable appearance much faster when struck, however, it gets scratched, and secondly, it transfers the blow to the watch mechanism much better. So it’s not worth using this watch in a particularly extreme way. And they will suffer externally and inside it will not be too good. Instead of a total external rubber protection, there are 2 pads on the sides, fixed with screws, slightly covering the case and glass from accidental impacts. A sort of "armored bra" from the watch industry;) But it looks beautiful - you can't refuse it. As well as metal inserts in the color of the case on the belt with GIEZ stamping:
By the way, the belt itself is very nice. It is very elastic and soft. Fits perfectly in the hand and is comfortable at the same time. A very, very weighty (metal after all) watch sits on it just fine
As you can see - the clock is digital-analog. And this, in my opinion, is a pretty big plus. The GIEZ series did not get, alas, really sophisticated modern multi-engine mechanisms (apparently they didn’t get into the budget due to the price of the case) - therefore, for the most part, switch GIEZs have a truncated functionality. Either there is no timer, then there is no stopwatch, then there are no alarms. In this case, nothing had to be sacrificed.

The upper display is responsible for displaying information - either the time zone or the day of the week + indicators.

The right dial is the time of the second time zone in 24-hour format, which is very convenient (the PM / AM indicator is on the upper display).

The arrow of the left dial - mode indicator (WT, ST, TR, AL available), in the time display mode - shows the battery level (C, L, M, H) or is in a parking space in sleep mode (P.S). T1/T2 is the mode of displaying information on the displays at the time of selection. Day of the Week/Time Zone for the top and Time/Day of the Month for the bottom.

All additional functionality (stopwatch, timer, alarm clock) is organized on the lower display. On the left side of it. Right section - replacement of the second hand)

In general, the organization is convenient and does not cause any complaints. As is already clear from the presence of a charge indicator and the inscription TOUGH SOLAR- the watch is powered by light. It is enough to wear them from time to time in good light and you can not worry about replacing the battery for quite some time.

And the backlight (including automatic - when you turn your hand) can be used unlimitedly.

Speaking of lighting. Luminous composition is applied on the arrows and risks. Not that it would be very bright, but noticeable. Particularly pleased with the double risk at 12 o'clock. Never confuse up and down in the dark.
In addition to the phosphor - there is also an active backlight - implemented in the form of an LED at 6 o'clock. Looks amazingly beautiful:
Usefulness, alas, is minimal - it practically does not illuminate the screens. EL backlighting would be much more appropriate. But to see the arrows after the lum is exhausted, it allows without problems.

In general, it’s quite entertaining - but the same watch with different colors looks completely different. Silver with playful red notes against strict black with gold.

It is impossible to choose who is prettier. Both are good, each in its own way, whatever one may say!

In general, if it were not for the extreme rarity of finding this model on sale (alas, it’s just right to put it in the Red Book) - we could recommend it to everyone.

The silver ones are now one of my favorite watches, and the bronze one is one of my colleague's favorite watches (special thanks to him for providing a copy for the photo shoot).

To all lovers of heavy metal on hand, for a change after weightless ordinary plastic G-Shocks - if you can find it on sale - you can take it without hesitation.

As you probably already know, dear readers, this year Casio is celebrating the 35th anniversary of the G-Shock. In honor of this event, the Japanese brand tirelessly releases one thematic collection after another. Some we have already covered, something was even on the review. Recently released G-Shock 35th Anniversary “D” Collection: Frogman GF-8235D, DW-5035D, DW-5735D.

But today we will not talk about her. A very interesting re-release of those very first G-Shocks was presented, but in an unusual design and using more advanced stuffing. And so, meet all-steel (almost) G-Shock GMW-B5000D-1 and GMW-B5000TFG-9.

The 5,000 series is one of Casio's most popular. Sufficiently compact and comfortable watches, and not deprived of functionality, have many fans. However, sometimes in their direction you can hear the derogatory epithet " plastic toy". Probably, these people have not heard about the domestic Japanese classic GW-5000, which has a steel case with a DLC coating hidden under a patch, unfortunately for some, a plastic welt.

The idea of a steel "Shock" is not new, from recent ones one can recall a whole series of G-Steel or expensive MTG-MRGs, but these were pointer or mixed analog-digital versions. Actually, after the “five-thousanders”, making them in steel is a completely logical and expected move. Fans of the brand have been asking for this for a very long time.

The case size of the novelty is 49.3 x 43.2 x 13 mm, weight 167 grams with a bracelet. There is a shock-absorbing spacer between the body and the outer steel frame to absorb shocks.

The bracelet has a non-standard connection with the case, it is fastened with a pin and bolts. Those who want to put NATO or another strap will again have to look for adapters. Although, I think the bracelet fits this watch perfectly. Glass, contrary to rumors and expectations, is mineral. Water resistance is 200 meters. The back cover is steel screw-down, with DLC coating.

The version with catalog number GMW-B5000D-1JF comes in steel and will be a production model, while GMW-B5000TFG-9JR is ion-coated golden color, is a limited edition released for the 35th anniversary of G-Shock. It comes with special packaging.

The Japanese price of the steel GMW-B5000D-1JF is ¥60,000 JPY (approximately $560), while the gold-limited GMW-B5000TFG-9JR is priced at ¥70,000 JPY ($660). It's pretty high price for this line, which, however, is somewhat offset by decent functionality.

There are the usual timer, stopwatch, perpetual calendar, daily alarms, time in different time zones, etc. The watch is recharged by a Tough Solar solar battery (in complete darkness, the battery will last up to 10 months with active use, up to 22 months in sleep mode), and supports Multiband 6 radio synchronization technology (time correction by radio signal). A very nice feature is that, unlike other models in the series, the day of the week can be displayed in six languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Russian. GMW-B5000 support Bluetooth V4.1 technology.

Thanks to the downloadable application, you can use your smartphone to set the clock, such as alarms, time zone, synchronize the exact time in one of 300 cities around the world. This can be done automatically using the smartphone's built-in GPS. Reminder of up to 5 pre-recorded dates and events. Phone search function. However, the most important thing, notification of incoming calls and messages, unfortunately, is not. Looking forward to the 45th anniversary))

Another nice feature is the use of STN (super-twisted nematic) LCD screen. This is a technology based on the principle of a passive matrix, consisting of LCD elements with variable transparency. Twisted Nematic literally means “twisted crystals” in English, here nematic is a type of liquid crystals used in an LCD display (the molecules of such a crystal are organized only in orientational, but not positional order). The use of STN technology improves image contrast and increases viewing angles. It is the small viewing angles of the previous generation screens that are perhaps one of the most annoying shortcomings of electronic G-Shocks. On my 5610, I constantly have to turn my hand to see the current time, and not something that looks like 88:88. Previously, Casio has installed STN screens in some Pro-Trek models.

Around the display there is a decorative pattern - the image of "bricks". This probably symbolizes continuity and a tribute to the very first G-Shock model.

By the way, the backlight is not already familiar, and beloved by many is green electroluminescent, but LED Super Illuminator LED light, with an afterglow.

G-Shock lovers got really interesting model, in a steel case, which has been dreamed of for quite some time. Obviously, a rather high price will not stop them from purchasing this watch. I would like to believe that we will be able to see this module (electronic filling with a display) in more mass-produced, popular models.
