Thai technique for clothes. It's time to tie: How the favorite hippie tie-dye pattern returned to men's fashion

The Thai Dai technique itself is more than one hundred years old and its homeland is Ancient India and China. The hippie movement in the last century breathed into her new life and now many modern clothing brands use this technique for dyeing manufactured products. However, it is possible to save money on buying a precious branded T-shirt and easily make a masterpiece of modern technology at home.

Variety of patterns

How many people - so many judgments and the same number of options for coloring clothes using the tie-dye technique. We are talking about options for acquiring patterns, and the colors of paints, their saturation and mixing with each other can be all sorts.

Here are some of them, starting with the most famous:

  • spiral - to acquire this classic and most famous tie-dye T-shirt pattern, you need to lay out the clothes on a flat surface, and then place your thumb in the center and, using your index fingers, start wrapping it in a circle. Fix the resulting pattern with threads or elastic bands;
  • vertical or horizontal stripes - for this, the T-shirt must also be laid out on a flat surface and rolled into a tube, starting from the bottom. With the help of elastic bands, intercept it in several places. Their number will determine the number of horizontal stripes on the clothes. If you roll the T-shirt into a tube not from below, but from some side, you can get a pattern with vertical stripes;
  • polka dots - this pattern is very easy to get, it is enough to intercept small tucks on a T-shirt with an elastic band in all sorts of arbitrary places. If you twist them a little according to the spiral thesis, you will get several circles of the corresponding shape;
  • how to make a tie-dye T-shirt using a technique that involves placing a pattern in the shape of a rose on it? To do this, you need to make three tucks next to each other and combine them together with an elastic band. The more pintucks you have, the more detailed the rosette will turn out;
  • if you do not know what pattern you want to get, primitively crumple the T-shirt into a ball and wrap it with elastic bands. As a result, you will get a wrinkled result;
  • Creases - to create folds, the shirt must be folded into a fan shape. As a result, you will get horizontal or vertical stripes, as in the second type;
  • lightning - this technique for tie-dye clothing is considered one of the most difficult. To acquire a lightning pattern, it must be folded in half and across, so that the inflection line passes through the center of the neck. Now make two folds so that its seams form the letter "and". It is possible to make several such layers or folds, the main thing is to maintain a distance of 5 cm between them. Do not forget to intercept the product with elastic bands: the larger they are, the more detailed the lightning will turn out.

We dye clothes using the tie-dye technique

For coloring at home, you will need a plastic container or basin, the paints themselves and salt. Textile paints can be bought at any specialized store, although some users with a furor paint things with the support of ordinary acrylic paints.

If you plan to work with several colors, you will need the appropriate number of containers, otherwise you will have to rinse the basin every time and bring in the newest solution.

Proceed according to the further algorithm:

  • Dilute coloring composition according to the instructions and add a tablespoon of salt to it, which will help it to fix better on the fabric. Keep in mind that the more water you add to the container, the paler the color will turn out;
  • Having drawn paint into a syringe or lightly dipping a brush into it, apply an ornament to the fabric. If there is neither one nor the other, the solution can be easily poured onto the fabric. If you plan to use another color of the coloring solution, do the same;
  • Leave the T-shirt to dry for one day: this is necessary for the final fixing of the pattern on the fabric;
  • Now it remains to wash the product in warm water and dry at room temperature.

classic spiral

How to make circles on a T-shirt is pretty obvious, but how to make a classic tie-dye spiral is not. A video from the TutorialsByA channel will show that this is not as difficult as it seems. For those who don't like videos - instructions with photos on how to make a complex pattern using a fork.

Mandala

If you have already mastered basic techniques and looking for something more complicated, experiment with " mandalas» . The pattern can be as intricate as you like - it all depends on your willingness to think through the project in advance, and then fiddle with folds and ropes.

yin and yang

We continue the Eastern theme, which surprisingly suits the technique that flourished in the 1960s, along with the incredible enthusiasm of young people for exotic teachings for the West. The video tutorial below will teach you how to make textiles with an ancient Chinese character. And it's easier than it looks.

With embroidery

Instead of the usual binding, you can baste a pattern on the fabric, and then tighten the seams. Suitable for the most assiduous and those who love neat designs that may not resemble the rough and bright patterns of the classic tie-dye. The patterns made in this technique are similar to coral or outlandish fossil mollusc shells, so they can decorate things that you take with you on vacation.

Watermelon

Under the watermelon, you can also dye textiles for gatherings in the garden, and children's clothes. How to do this, teaches the author of the blog Sweet Lil You Sarah.

And another idea, this time for older children. Instead of giving money to companies that want to cash in on comic book and blockbuster fans, try making your own with your favorite superhero symbol. Here is an instruction on how to combine the incompatible and make the symbol of Captain America in the tie-dye technique.

And remember: dyes don't always hold as well as factory dye, so wash in cool water and separate from light-colored clothing.

How to make tie-dye shirts

Today I will show you how to make tie give shirts with your own hands at home.

Dyeing tie-dye t-shirts is a longstanding practice of hippies, bodybuilders and people who love colorful clothing.

How to create a variety of tie-dye patterns

1. Make stripes. Lay the shirt on a flat surface, wrap it up starting from the bottom of the shirt. You should have a tube. Next, tie a few elastic bands around the shirt.

To avoid having too many stripes, use 3-4 elastic bands maximum. For a large number strips, use more than a dozen elastic bands.
By wrapping the shirt from the bottom up, you will get vertical stripes.
If you want the T-shirt to have horizontal stripes, fold the T-shirt starting from the left or right side.

2. Create a spiral. This is the most classic tie-dye t-shirt pattern and one of the most popular. To create a spiral, place the shirt on a flat surface, and using your thumb and index finger, begin to wrap the shirt in a circle, starting from the center.

If the shirt starts to wrinkle, straighten it.
Once you've coiled the shirt, use large elastic bands to tie the shirt around. You will need to divide the shirt into at least six pieces, which means you will need three elastic bands.
For a more varied pattern, use more rubber bands. All rubber bands should have one common center.
You can create several small spirals in different corners of the shirt.

3. Make a polka dot pattern. Take a T-shirt and pinch it to make "pimples". Tie the base of the pimples with a rubber band. Do the same thing a few times until you have a lot of sticking out pieces of the shirt.

You can make the pattern look like a target if you tie the ends of the pimples with rubber bands. The more rubber bands, the more circles.
You can use a rubber band dipped in paint of any color to create colored circles.

4. Make roses. Roses, these are small circles on a T-shirt. To do this, pinch the T-shirt a few times to get a few pimples and tie them together with an elastic band.

By using a lot of rubber bands you will create a more spiral pattern for your roses. You can make as many roses as you like.
For a more detailed rosette, use more pimples.

5. Give the shirt a wrinkled look. This is the easiest pattern for a tie-dye T-shirt, since all you have to do is crumple the T-shirt and wrap as many elastic bands as you want around it.

6. Create folds. Starting at the end of your tank top, fold it into an accordion.

Tie the shirt with elastic bands as many times as you like. This method is similar to the strip method. The more rubber bands, the more stripes.
If you wrap the T-shirt from the bottom up, you get vertical stripes. If you turn from left to right or vice versa, you get horizontal stripes (see point 1).

7. Create a lightning. This is the most difficult pattern, since it requires a lot of folding, but it is very beautiful pattern. Starting from the middle of the shirt, fold it so that, looking at it from the side, you get the letter "I". Do the same a few times until you have multiple layers. Each layer should start 5 cm below the previous one.

When you're done, the shirt should look like old washboards.
Turn the shirt diagonally and draw a straight line towards the center of the shirt. Fold the shirt like an accordion from one side to the center, and then from the other.
Now, tie the shirt into bundles with rubber bands. The more elastic bands you use, the more detailed the zipper will be. For a simple zipper, 3-4 elastic bands are enough.

How to dye a tie-dye shirt

1. Prepare everything you need for work. Dyeing clothes, an extremely messy job. To prevent you from soiling anything, cover the table you will be working on with an unnecessary tablecloth or sheet, and try to stay away from carpets and furniture.

Prepare everything you need to work with T-shirts in advance, otherwise you will have to run around the apartment in search of everything you need in dyed gloves, which can lead to unwanted staining of the house.
Use a grill rack to keep the shirt off the work surface so you can cook it on each side.
Have extra wipes or rags with you to wipe up if you accidentally dripped paint in the wrong place.

2. Soak the shirt. Many clothes dyes come with a special soda in the package, which helps the dye to be better absorbed into clothes. Dilute the baking soda with water and soak the T-shirt in it for 20 minutes.

If the paint package didn't include baking soda, you can soak the shirt in warm water. You can also buy clothes soda from specialty stores.
Do not use cold or hot water, as this impairs the effect of paints.
If you don't want the paint to bleed too much on the shirt, paint it dry.

3. Prepare your paints. Instructions must be attached to each package of paints. If you don't want to follow the instructions, just dilute the paint with as much warm water as you like.

To make pastels, use more water and less paint. For bright colors, use less water and more paint.

4. Color the shirt. You can color the shirt either by dipping it into the paint or by pouring the paint into bottles and using it as a spray. If you're going to be dipping the shirt in paint, just grab it and dip the part of the shirt you want to dye. You can toss a whole shirt in one color, and then, when it dries a little, dip it in other colors as well. Thus, you get layers of colors.

If you want the colors to be layered, first dip the shirt into light colors and then into dark ones.
If you mix opposite colors (for example, blue with orange, yellow with lilac, red with green), where the colors will meet, you will get a brown tint.
It is not necessary to dye the entire shirt. You can dye just a few pieces of a T-shirt. Thus, you get patterns against the background of the original color of the shirt.

5. Let the paint soak in. Wrap the shirt in plastic bag to keep it moist and set it aside for 4-6 hours. Thus, the color will be well absorbed into the T-shirt. If you put the shirts in a warm place, the dye will soak in faster.

6. Squeeze out the paint. put on latex gloves, remove the shirt from the bag, remove the elastic bands and unfold the shirt. Rinse the shirt with cold water to wash off any excess paint. Try not to splash or you will stain your clothes too.

7. Wash your shirt. Put the shirt in washing machine. Put the washing machine on a cold wash and wait for it to finish. Then, you should run an empty washing machine to wash it off the paint.

8. Dry and wear the shirt with pleasure. Put the shirt in the dryer or let it dry on its own, and your tie-dye shirt is ready!

Tips for using the tie-dye technique

1. Never use boiling or hot water, otherwise the paint will not be able to properly absorb into the clothes.

2. Try not to use synthetic clothing as the dye reacts differently than with cotton clothing.

3. Use rubber gloves and an apron to keep your hands and clothing clean.

4. Wash your shirt before soaking it for coloring. Dirt can prevent paint from absorbing properly into clothing.

5. Try to use 100% cotton clothing for best results. Don't forget to wash your shirt the day after painting to remove any excess paint.

We buy paints mainly in Finland. We go to art shops in Helsinki for powder dyes. We buy things in second-hand stores, but in Lately people bring us their old things. They ask us to remake them for them, or simply leave them to us.

Now we have already worked out the dyeing technology, so the paints are practically not washed off. Of course, we warn that it is better to wash at a temperature of 40 degrees, do not use bleach, do not boil. We paint only natural fabrics. This is, firstly, our concept, and secondly, synthetics are very difficult to dye in our conditions.

We haven’t got our own workshop, while we do everything ourselves at home. To do this, you need a large saucepan, paints, salt, soda, fixatives. In four hours of work, we manage to paint up to two dozen things. Natural coloring (with leaves, flowers) can take a week, so we practically do not use it, and the result is more unpredictable. The execution of the order most often takes five days, but if something is urgent, we will do it in a day. We make a batch of 100-200 items once a week and attach our labels.

We have no direct competitors, because everyone is engaged either in classic tie-dye or using acrylic. We do not do standard tie-dye, various spirals, etc. We have calm, not flashy colors. We use powder dyes, mostly natural, which allow the fabric to remain soft.

Range and clients

Now we have a rather narrow assortment: sweatshirts, shorts, t-shirts, shirts, socks. The price range is from 400 rubles (shorts) to 1,500 rubles (hoodies). We also sell dyed fabric.

Our customers are young people and girls from 15 to 30 years old. There are already regular customers who are waiting for new products from us. Some even come up with funny names for our things. So, one girl from Moscow called the leggings that we dyed for her “moldy legs”. Girls are more likely to buy sweatshirts, guys - shirts. Shorts sell well in the summer. Bestseller - socks, take three or four pairs. Our first batch sold out immediately. We did not even expect such an effect.
