Do you need a backpack? How to choose a satchel

We choose friends ourselves, and time leaves the best. With backpacks, it’s about the same, but a little easier, since experience matters. I will share my many years of experience in this article.

Long time backpack fan

Great interest in comfortable carry-on luggage in general and in backpacks in particular appeared in 2007, when he changed his permanent job like “digging from the fence until the evening” to freelance and small business in its various manifestations. Implementation of the concept personal office always with you”started with some discreet and flat HP backpack and an LG P300 laptop, aka Zebra.

Model of such a plan, but an older model

This connection made me happy big amount pockets and pockets - we managed to neatly put the external optical drive, drive, memory, flash drives, cables and other little things in their places. But the protection of the laptop left much to be desired. The laptop literally dangled in a large pocket made of thin fabric and without a latch located inside the main compartment. No dampening material in the bottom, no frame inserts, just a bag for a laptop.

Although, the LG P300 is a rather small and plump device, and this leveled the weak physical protection of the backpack (calculated up to 17-inch models), since there was a decent distance between the outer walls and the gadget and it did not crawl from side to side. But when I decided to switch to OS X in 2008 and switched to a 15" Unibody MacBook Pro, full height the question arose of replacing the backpack precisely because of the weak physical security of the laptop pocket. I was especially worried when, in the simplest situations, I slammed my laptop on hard surfaces a couple of times.

The choice fell on Logitech Kinetics, whose analogues do not exist so far. This backpack served faithfully for three years, which was written about. Then the brisk search for the perfect hand luggage began. For ten years I have experienced a couple of dozens of all kinds of backpacks and slings, gained a lot of experience in choosing this kind of accessories, which I will share below.

Looking ahead, I note that I have not yet found the perfect backpack for myself, and this is impossible in principle. After all, sooner or later, even the most best thing may get bored or the needs will change. Accordingly, the search process is endless, but fascinating. And the more experience, the more interesting and suitable for the current realities of life things can be picked up.

Before starting, I draw your attention to the links that will be found below. They lead to personal, very detailed reviews of hand luggage, which is exemplified by one or another important feature. With the help of this article, you can quickly determine your needs, and if you want to learn more about some nuances, then click on the links.

What are backpacks

In short, small, medium, large, single strap (they are also slings) and classic with two straps. There are also specialized models with compartments for photographic equipment, skateboard holders and other features. There are also modular options that can be clearly adapted to your needs. True, they look peculiar, as they take an example from military equipment, but they are indestructible, versatile and thought out to the smallest detail. Now let's analyze all the mentioned points in more detail.

Backpack size selection

The reasonable size of a city backpack is up to 35 liters. Anything more is either for traveling or for rare EDC maniacs who carry dozens of things with them every day for all occasions, up to the zombie apocalypse.

For ease of understanding the topic, we will divide the models into large, medium and small:

  • 30-35 liters;
  • 23-28 liters;
  • up to 20 liters respectively.

Backpacks with a volume of 30-35 liters - this is the limit for use in the urban cycle And yes, they will be big. Such an accessory is justified if you often have to go on business trips lasting up to a week, while there is no desire to clutter up your home with extra hand luggage.

The exception is models with compression straps that allow you to compact the backpack if it is half empty. An example of such - Wenger Large Volume Pack. A couple of movements and a 30-liter boar turns into a very flat (albeit rather wide) urban "two-lane".

One of my favorite backpacks, however, with its own nuances, such as a system of nested volumes and the absence of a frame (a kind of cool bag with a lot of pockets). Read the review for details:

Its anti-example is a 34 liter OGIO Renegade RSS. Even if you put only a laptop, memory, water bottle, tablet and external drive in it, the backpack will protrude like a huge hump.

On the other hand, it has a very well protected laptop compartment, a frame and a really large number of pockets and compartments, and with reasonable placement. A chic accessory for a gadget lover and a really handy hand luggage on the road. I managed only with this backpack to go on a week-long business trip to two cities at once - to Moscow and to - dragging a laptop, a healthy camera, a tablet, a couple of smartphones, a change of clothes and other little things on the road. Read more about this model here:

Another large backpack that has served me well in the urban cycle and on business trips is Thule Crossover 32L Backpack(). Among its chips, one can note a very strong, literally indestructible branded nylon, a protected compartment for glasses and delicate equipment, and an external pocket for large fleece-type items. But we'll talk about the features of this kind of accessories a little later, for now let's get back to the sizes.

Large backpacks in the vast majority of cases easily accommodate a 17 or even 18-inch laptop, plus any reasonable amount of equipment on the road. There is still room for a bottle of water, a container of food, a set of linen for 3-5 days and a change of clothes.

The most versatile models are medium-sized with a volume of 23-28 liters. In personal practice, they proved to be excellent both as a companion during short trips for a couple of days, and as a city backpack. Now I use it, but this is a very unusual thing that suits my personal needs well. True, with a laptop change, you will also have to update the backpack, which I will talk about in the chips section. Previously, a couple of years faithfully served Kata DR467i, and belongs to the same class of hand luggage.

In terms of capacity for equipment, such accessories are comparable to large models, that is, a laptop, a tablet, a large SLR camera, any electronic small things, a bottle of water, a folding umbrella will fit, and there will also be a place for a fleece if it suddenly gets hot and needs to be hidden. But you can’t take a lot of clothes or replaceable shoes with you, so such a backpack will not work on business trips for more than 2-3 days.

In addition, often mid-range models can accommodate a maximum of a 15-inch laptop. Although in most cases, more is not needed.

Small and flat backpacks up to 20 liters convenient in that they can not be removed even in public transport. Judging by personal practice, they do not interfere with people. But don't expect to stuff a 17-20 liter toddler with a lot of things.

This kind of hand luggage is good for moving a laptop, tablet, wallet and some small things between home and office, but no more. Often, even a container with food cannot be squeezed in, although a lot depends on the model.

I personally prefer compact slings, the features of which will be discussed in the next section. As for the classic double straps, out of the unusual models, I used them with the built-in proprietary GRID-IT rubber band system. An incredibly flat, high-quality and stylish accessory that can fit a lot of things... except for a container with food and even a bottle of water there is nowhere to squeeze. Yes, and there were questions about the straps, I will talk about this below.

A very pleasant and roomy model turned out to be 19-liter. It looks a little unattractive when half empty, but it is very light, comfortable on the straps, there are external mesh compartments for water bottles and small things, a protected glasses compartment, laptop and tablet pockets.

They rarely exceed 20 liters in volume, and due to their unusual shape, in most cases they can accommodate everything that may be needed in the urban wilds, from a laptop and small electronics to a large camera, a bottle of water and a container of food. With the same Thule Crossover Sling mentioned above, I went on many business trips, where I carried a large mirrorless camera, a laptop and other useful things with me. One of the reasons is the ability to quickly move the sling to the chest and get the things you need without removing it.:

And here comes an important question! And which sling should I take - left-handed or right-handed? I started my acquaintance with left-handed models (the strap hangs on the left shoulder) and for the first time I focused only on them. It was because of this that at one time I acquired a left-handed one.

By the way, the modular paramilitary models from Maxpedition are chic and indestructible, but quite heavy, and with additional body kit they are also bulky. On the other hand, in the mentioned model, supplemented with a Janus Extension Pocket bag built into the belt and a Coocoon Pouch pocket, I could carry some incredible amount of things. But I digress.

Returning to the issue of straps, I will give a simple answer - do not bother with it! It doesn't matter which shoulder the strap is on - on the left or on the right - and it doesn't matter which way the sling spins when you throw it on your chest. You get used to the new version in just an hour of using another model. I checked it on my own experience when I was able to get the coveted Thule Crossover Sling 2nd Generation(). Suddenly, he turned out to be right-handed, which scared me a little, but, I repeat, I got used to it in just an hour. Although even this handsome man did not stay with me for a long time. His place was taken Dakine HUB Sling 15L(also right-handed), which I have been using for almost a year and do not plan to change yet, but this is a separate big story, and we continue the banquet.

There is another interesting category photo backpacks, but not professional monsters for three carcasses of SLR cameras, a pair of lenses the size of a howitzer and a smaller heel caliber, and even a bunch of straps for tripods. No, we are talking about the so-called Half Photo models like Crumpler Jackpack.

Their trick is that only part of the space is allocated for photographic equipment, usually from below. Half of the volume on top can be filled with others useful things. And in the photo department, in addition to the camera, chargers, external drives, food containers and other things are perfectly placed. Due to their shape and configuration, they allow the most efficient use of the entire working volume, keeping things in order and giving quick access to the necessary equipment, whether it be a laptop or a camera. By the way, the Kata DR 467i mentioned above is from the same series. Details about all the chips of this kind of products, read the review below:

What's with the fabric?

Most backpacks are made from nylon. A good, strong and unpretentious material, but much depends on its density, weaving and impregnation.

Unnamed Chinese models for $10-20 are usually made of just "nylon" without frills. Often it is not very dense, with a loose weave (a thin fabric that is easily damaged by catching) and without protection from water. It doesn’t get wet instantly, but it’s better not to fall under the downpour with such a backpack. In general, the lion's share of the price of an accessory is its main fabric, plus accessories.

Branded models from well-known brands are created on the basis of more expensive options for high-density nylon and, sometimes, with special impregnation.

For example, there is cordura(CORDURA) from INVISTA - a very dense fabric with a special weave, water-repellent impregnation and Teflon coating. It was originally created for the military, but is now often used in civilian hand luggage. A powerful and almost indestructible material (all Maxpedition products are made of it), but rather rough to the touch. For an amateur.

There is also the so-called ballistic nylon, created several decades ago by DuPont and also for the needs of the military. It has a high density (1600D and more), good protection against water and tear resistance. In the past, they even made bulletproof vests from it. An example of a backpack made of such a fabric is this.

An interesting look of nylon - ripstop. It also has great tear resistance, is waterproof, but unlike ballistic nylon, is quite thin and very light. Folding backpacks and bags are often made from such fabric, or inserts in places experiencing great stress during operation.

Worthy alternative to nylon - polyester. The fabric with a very fine weave, has water-repellent properties, practically does not tear and does not get dirty. I also strongly recommend backpacks based on this material. A striking example is OGIO Renegade RSS.

In addition, it is worth mentioning nylon coated with thermoplastic polyurethane. It is completely waterproof, very strong, almost does not get dirty and is easily cleaned of any dirt. The Spigen SGP New Coated Backpack and the beloved Dakine HUB Sling 15L are made from this material.

Leather backpacks I don’t understand - the material is heavy, not practical, and the layout for departments of such luggage is usually very simple, like a “bag”. But status.

All sorts of exotics made of thick cotton or waxed fabric are not for everybody. But usually these backpacks are also not very practical.

Features and chips that you need to pay great attention to when choosing

Let's talk about the important little things that make up a positive (or negative) experience of using a backpack.

Webbing

The moment is very individual, because of which I highly recommend finding an opportunity to try it on before buying a backpack. For example, one of the reasons for the sale of Cocoon MCP3401 was the straps. I was ready to put up with its small volume and, just for the sake of GRID-IT, I would leave it in my personal collection and use it according to my mood.

The straps themselves are good, soft, ventilated, with comfortable strap fasteners, but they did not lie on my shoulders in any way. It will skew to the left, then to the right - uncomfortable and inconvenient, no matter how I set them up and twist them.

But when he put on the Wenger Large Volume Daypack, he lay on his shoulders like a native, gently clasping them and gently pressing against his back. The same goes for the Thule Legend GoPro. No matter how I loaded these backpacks, the shoulders were always comfortable, and the weight was almost not felt.

In general, the moment is individual, but I formed for myself a few rules high-quality straps, in addition to personal comfort, which can only be determined by directly testing the product:

  • Shoulder straps should be padded and ventilated(it can be a thin pillow or perforation). The softer they are, the higher the likelihood that they will fit well on the shoulders. Although in the same Thule Legend GoPro, the straps are quite stiff, but they clearly fit my shape.
  • Should have a chest strap. A very useful and invaluable accessory that allows you to significantly increase the comfort when using a backpack, especially if it is heavy due to a large number useful things inside. The chest strap relieves the shoulders a little and fixes the straps on them better.
  • Reliable clips with the ability to quickly change the length of the belt. I used to try to adjust the straps once and for all, but quickly realized that in this case it was inconvenient to remove and put on a backpack. I usually loosen the left strap as much as possible before I take off the accessory, and tighten it when I put it on. You do not have to dodge the whole body in the process. The trouble is if the latches do not hold the belt under the weight of a loaded backpack, but this is extremely rare. However, check this point when buying, if possible. It is not necessary to load a backpack, just put it on and try to stick out the straps with your hands with force.
  • Shoulder pockets are usually useless, so ignore them.. There is - and it's good, no, well, okay. The problem is the bend on the shoulder - the pocket stretches and it becomes problematic to get something out of it or put it on the go.

Back

Everything is simple here - ventilation is required, whether it be built-in pads made of special fabric or special grooves. If the back of the backpack is completely flat, then your back will be constantly wet.

The exception is slings. They usually do not fit very tightly to the back and it does not sweat.

Fittings and other little things

It is highly desirable that the lightning be protected from rain. This may be a small valve above it, or a special design of the zipper itself. Waterproof models are usually turned inside out and very thin. They are rubberized. If in front of you is a simple lightning without frills, be careful - this one leaks easily under a downpour.

By the way, this is one of the rare minuses of the OGIO Renegade RSS backpack - its zippers are very strong, comfortable, large, but not at all protected from rain. And here is an example of a protected lightning in the Crumpler Jackpack Half Photo:

Pay attention to how the zippers work, how convenient it is to unfasten them (waterproof ones are usually quite tight - this is normal), whether there are rope straps that make life much easier.

Again, the difference between expensive products of famous brands from the nameless "Chinese" in fittings. High-quality models often use Japanese YKK (one of the best), reliable plastic in fastex and fasteners, and sometimes aluminum (in some Thule models).

Compression straps- also a useful addition, especially in large models of backpacks. They can also be used to fasten a jacket on the outside if it is not needed at the moment (I went to a warm supermarket, took it off outerwear and freed his hands, fixing it on the backpack).

External compartments for water bottles save great amount interior space of backpacks. You have to drink all the time if you want to feel good. There is no external pocket, you will have to use the main compartment, from where it is not very convenient to get water, and it’s scary if it leaks. I also carry a compact umbrella in these departments, it happens that I hide all sorts of little things there, like paper napkins, folding string bag, etc.

Pen important and necessary, any - thick, thin, if only it were. As practice shows, it is extremely inconvenient to carry a backpack by the strap, even if you just need to rearrange it from place to place.

It is desirable that laptop pocket was designed as a separate space with its own zipper. In extreme cases, you need a latch of this department so that the laptop does not hang out inside.

Ideal size and format

For everyone, this question is individual, but I will share my ideal set at the moment.

Every day in the urban cycle I use a compact 15-liter Dakine sling - it is almost invisible, it holds everything I need, including a laptop, a water bottle, small electronics, there is a place for a food container and an umbrella. And in general, the volume is enough to leave home early in the morning and return full and satisfied late in the evening, without bombing cafes and restaurants during the day.

If you need to take a large camera and all the working equipment with you, or when you have to travel to another city for a day or two, then I use the Thule Legend GoPro. But, as mentioned above, it's time to change it.

The fact is that the 13-inch MacBook Pro no longer fits in the hydropack compartment, where the MacBook 12 perfectly squeezed in a case. That is, you have to hide it in a case in the main department, which takes up a lot of useful space there. I really like the protected front section, where the Sony A7i fits perfectly and from which it can be quickly removed on the go. And in general, in terms of the layout of pockets and access to them, it is excellent, but all good things come to an end sooner or later.

I am currently looking at Thule Paramount 24L Daypack and on eBags Professional Slim Laptop Backpack.

But I'm sure you get the basic idea. It is good to have a compact backpack for the urban cycle and a medium or large model for special occasions and trips. I have been trying for a long time to find the ideal and versatile hand luggage - there is no such thing. The proposed scheme with two backpacks is very close to ideal. It remains for everyone to choose something suitable for personal needs. The moment is difficult, but interesting. Ah, those sweet pangs of choice.

A backpack is a fairly convenient means of placing and carrying things. Their main advantage is the transfer of weight from the arms to the shoulders. This is very important, especially in cases where you need to carry things over long distances.

This article is intended for persons over 18 years of age.

Are you over 18 already?

They can be conditionally divided into several main categories:

  1. Orthopedic - with a rigid back for transporting heavy loads. Suitable for schoolchildren and students, as well as for those people who have problems with the spine.
  2. Stylish leather backpacks of small volume - ideal for the office and suitable as an addition to everyday style.
  3. Soft - can be taken by an older child. They are especially relevant for teenagers.
  4. Women's - they evening dress, of course, will not work, but for lovers of everyday or sports style this is what you need.
  5. Children's - small soft backpacks for preschoolers are very convenient, but not designed for heavy loads.
  6. Tourist - huge and roomy models designed to carry a large number of things for a hike.

Often, when choosing a backpack, a rather logical question arises - which company is better to choose a backpack? There are many manufacturers of high-quality models and it would be wrong to put one of them in priority. If the brand is important to you, then read reviews about it on special forums. Yes, and there the information may be slightly distorted (advertising and competition have not been canceled). Therefore, it is better to trust your eyes - before buying, it is important to examine the backpack for factory defects, and the quality of the fabric is immediately visible.

What is better to choose: a bag or a backpack

The fundamental difference between them is the distribution of the weight to be carried.

The backpack has several advantages at once:

  • carrying a load on the back is much easier than in the hands;
  • proper load distribution is the key to a healthy back;
  • free hands. This is especially important when traveling on public transport or people with small children.

Bags are preferable as an accessory for a solemn exit.

How to choose a backpack for a first grader

First school year significant not only the beginning of training, but also the fact that for the first time in their lives children are faced with the transfer of weights (the average weight of a child's backpack reaches 4, and even 6 kg). It’s good if the parents will wear the backpack for the whole 1st grade, but this is not always convenient. Therefore, his choice for the first class must be approached especially carefully.

Appearance

A first-grader should choose a bright catchy backpack, while boys prefer more restrained "masculine" tones. But still, all children, regardless of gender, love cartoon characters. That is why manufacturers often decorate their products with them. In this matter, you can completely trust your child: choose exactly the color and pattern that will help him express his individuality.

Backpack type

As a rule, parents choose an orthopedic school backpack. This is 100% correct - fragile children's backs need additional protection. But which company to choose a satchel for school is a secondary question, because the main thing is the correct fit and good quality. Even the most trendy backpack may simply not suit your child due to its anatomical capabilities.

Main selection criteria:

  1. The size of the backpack should not exceed the size of your child's back. Its width should be equal to the width of the shoulders, and the length - from the bottom of the neck to the waist.
  2. The straps should be wide and not cut into the shoulders. It is very good if the backpack has additional fasteners in the lumbar region (they will help distribute the weight more evenly).
  3. The weight of the backpack should not exceed 1-1.5 kg (therefore, light orthopedic children's backpacks without a rigid frame come in handy here).

Before buying any model, it is also worth reading which backpack has positive reviews on the school forum. This is a great way to find out all the advantages and disadvantages before buying.

How to choose a school backpack for a senior student

A backpack to school always needs increased criteria for selection. For a student, it should be roomy, resistant to mechanical damage and deformation, and also easy to carry. daily care. Orthopedic school bags are also relevant for a teenager.

How to choose it correctly? Here the rules are the same for both a first grader and a high school student: the size is directly proportional to the size of the back. It is especially important to choose a backpack with an orthopedic back for high school- the student has more objects, but his back has not yet had time to get stronger.

Therefore, the question of which backpack to choose for a school for grade 5 can be answered unambiguously - orthopedic. For a fifth-grader, it is also very important which company to choose a school backpack - this is a matter of image and authority, but whether to indulge your child should be decided on a purely individual basis. But how much of a satchel is needed for the school is a really important question. But ambiguous, because on the one hand, the more the better, and on the other hand, there are strict weight restrictions. For secondary school students, this is a maximum of 7 kg (net weight - 2 kg).

How to choose an infant carrier

Ergo backpacks have recently become very popular among young mothers as a convenient carrier for the child. Usually they are more interested in the question of which brand to choose than how to choose the right size and type of ergosling (and this is much more important).

The wrong choice of an airbag is fraught with undesirable consequences for both mother and child. To prevent this from happening, you should choose models according to the age and weight of the baby, with wide comfortable straps, reliable fasteners. It is also important to know how to choose the right quality of fabrics. They should be as natural as possible to ensure proper air circulation.

How to choose a baby carrier for a child older than 4 months

For a baby older than 4 months, you can pick up a kangaroo backpack. It will help to carry the child over a long distance with maximum bodily contact. It fits both parents perfectly and is very comfortable. But a kangaroo backpack for a baby needs to be selected very carefully, since low-quality models can greatly overload the child's spine. Yes, and mom can tear off her back with a cheap carrier very easily. Therefore, to the question of which kangaroo backpack to choose, the answer is unequivocal: high-quality.

Which is better to choose:

  • from light non-synthetic fabrics;
  • with wide straps and additional fastenings on the lower back;
  • with headrest;
  • with a comfortable back for the baby.

Very important point: a child in such a carrier can be no more than one hour a day. For longer walks, it is better to take a stroller with you.

What is better to choose - an ergo sling or a kangaroo backpack - there is no definite answer. But it is worth remembering that the main thing for these two models is the convenience of the child. When unloading yourself, it is very important not to harm the baby, so limit his time in any type of carrier as much as possible.

How to choose a backpack for the city

The urban backpack is small and versatile. His choice entirely depends on the taste and preferences of the owner. Therefore, there are simply no special rules on how to choose it correctly. The only important thing is the quality. Men's backpack should be made of non-marking quality fabric. Wide straps and number of compartments depends only on your preferences. Most often, a city backpack for men comes with a laptop compartment - an invariable companion of a modern person.

It is worth highlighting a special model of a city backpack for cyclists: a special mesh on the straps helps better ventilation. Therefore, if you prefer this type of transport, then it is better to look at sports options.

How to choose a hiking backpack

There are several types of travel backpacks:

  • for green tourism - backpacks with low weight, designed for easy walking over long distances;
  • tactical - models that were originally intended for the military during combat operations. But because of the large number of pockets and the possibility of attaching additional weight to them, they are great for fishing and hunting;
  • assault - designed for hiking in the mountains and "storming" the peaks;
  • cycling - for traveling light.

Therefore, the answer to the question of how to choose the right accessory for a hike depends entirely on the place of your vacation.

There are several rules for choosing a backpack for travel:

  • choose the right type - if you are not a fan of outdoor activities in the mountains, then you will not need an assault backpack;
  • when choosing, pay more attention not to which company the device is, but to the quality of the fabric, tailoring and fastenings (this is much more important);
  • calculate how much volume you need - 60 liters is enough for a hike for several days, while for longer transitions you need within 100 liters.

A backpack of any type is a great opportunity to make your movement comfortable in any conditions.

And you are ready to discover new horizons. And the first thing you need to buy yourself travel backpack. But how do you choose the right backpack? What is the difference between urban and hiking, men's and women's backpacks? What should you pay attention to when choosing? - Read about it below.

The main types of travel backpacks

A tourist backpack is different from a city one important detail- hip belt. Thanks to him, 70-80% of the weight of the backpack is transferred to the pelvic region and legs. This belt is the main "secret" of hiking: after all, carrying a weight of up to 20 kg on one shoulder for several days is very tiring and it is possible to earn back problems. Remember: almost the entire mass of the backpack rests on the belt, and the shoulders only hold it by the straps so that it does not fall back.

Backpacks for hiking and travel, roughly speaking, are divided into two types of designs: soft and frame.

Frameless hiking backpacks - pros and cons

Soft (or frameless) These are backpacks with a soft back. By the presence of ties, additional pockets and accessories, they are not inferior to frame backpacks. In such models, usually, instead of a frame, a karemat (rug) is used.

Advantages of frameless backpacks:

  • compactness: fold up to minimum dimensions;
  • lightness: they weigh two or more times less (in comparison with frame backpacks);
  • relatively low cost;

Minuses:

  • do not keep their shape - you need the ability to properly pack a backpack;
  • limited load adjustment between shoulders and waist;
  • discomfort with a large backpack weight;
  • limitation of large volume models.

Conclusion: to an inexperienced tourist, a model with a soft frame will most likely not seem very convenient to use. The first few years it is better to go to the mountains with a hard backpack.

Frame backpacks - pros and cons

Frame (rigid)- backpacks with frame system. In models with a small volume, a plastic plate can act as a frame, and in models designed for a larger weight, a system of arches made of light alloy metals (for example, duralumin) plays the role of a frame.

Pros of hard backpacks:

  • full adjustment of load distribution;
  • makes it comfortable to carry big weight for a long time;
  • a large assortment - the choice of a model for every taste and budget;
  • the ability to properly pack a backpack is not critical;

Minuses:

  • relatively large backpack. On average 2.5-4 kg;
  • medium and high cost;
  • an empty backpack cannot be rolled up compactly

Conclusion: despite some disadvantages of these backpacks, this the best choice for the beginner traveller. Therefore, we will dwell on them in more detail.

Differences between women's and men's backpack

The main differences are the shape and volume of the backpack.

It is known that the female body has different proportions than the male. And this is not to mention the individual characteristics of each person. Backpacks marked “women” take these nuances into account and offer models that are anatomically better suited for women.

The desired volume of a women's backpack is from 50 to 75 liters, men's - from 75 to 100. In addition, the weight carried by women should be 20-30% lighter compared to men. I saw such instructors who loaded fragile girls along with themselves with the words: “What? She also eats and sleeps in a tent. So let him bear it! Therefore, I appeal to the male half: let's also observe tolerance in the mountains and take care of our lovely ladies ☺

What to look for when choosing a backpack

The optimal size of a backpack for travel

As one experienced hiker said: “First you choose a backpack, and then the rest of the equipment that fits into it. But not vice versa." Therefore, the first thing you need to decide is the displacement (internal volume) of the backpack.

20-35 liters- a backpack for one-day hikes or climbs. Everything you need will fit here: a raincoat, a thermos, sandwiches, a first aid kit and personal items. Models with such a displacement are suitable, for example, for trips to the Carpathians, when you live in a comfortable house and go for a walk in the nearby mountains. In addition, they are convenient to use in the city or while traveling.

35-50 liters- storm or climbing backpacks. Considering the cost, such backpacks are usually used by freeriders, climbers or rescuers. For ordinary people, it can be useful during a holiday in a ski resort.

In this displacement range there are more simple models. For a beginner tourist, this will be the best choice. Designed for 2-3 day light trips.

50-100 liters- full camping backpack. It will fit everything you need for a trip from 4 to 20 days: warm clothes, a tent, a sleeping bag, boilers and food. And if something doesn’t fit, then there are special puffs on the outside that can be used to secure a mat, tent or other things. On the other hand, in this case, you should carefully review its contents: maybe you accidentally grabbed something extra?

100-150 liters- expedition backpacks. This volume is suitable for complex sports trips or expeditions lasting from 20 days to several months. With such a backpack - 140 liters - I went through 4 years and I can say with confidence: you need to try very hard to fill it to the brim. Even if it turned out to be done, I do not guarantee that it will be possible to carry such a weight for a long time.

Backpack back design

Standard back- this is a simple design of two metal rods with possible bends. The cost of such backpacks is usually quite adequate.

Orthopedic back- a more complex system of rigid elements, which allows you to remove the load from the spine as much as possible. Not every tourist can afford such pleasure.

easel back- a rigid frame with a suspension on which a thing-bag or other bulky cargo is attached. Used for expedition purposes. Such "mammoths" caught my eye extremely rarely.

In most modern backpacks (except for easel ones), numerous ties and slings located on the shoulder straps and hip belt allow you to properly adjust the back. The “correctness” of the adjustment can be suggested to you by a store consultant, or by a Couloir guide on a hike.

Hiking backpack weight

The mass of frameless backpacks is from 1 to 1.5 kg, and frame backpacks are from 2 to 4 kg.

The most optimal weight is 2.5 kg. Although there are models - for example, the German manufacturer Deuter - that weigh almost a kilogram more, they win in terms of quality of materials and ease of use.

Pockets and additional features

When choosing a backpack for hiking and traveling, special attention should be paid to the presence of pockets and other additional features that can greatly simplify your life in the mountains.

Valve- the top latch which gives access to the main department. This element is necessary to protect things from moisture and reduce the volume of the backpack.

Additional pockets- a small, but very convenient detail, which will definitely help you out more than once on a hike. They are located on the main cylinder of the backpack, in the valve and in the hip belt. Their main function is quick access to the map, compass, water and other small accessories.

In addition, models with a division into two sections or access to the lower section of the backpack are popular: for easy removal of a sleeping bag or boilers.

Compression straps- located on the sides of the main department. With their help, the volume of the backpack is reduced and equipment is additionally fixed (trekking poles, padding mat or tent).

External fasteners and hinges- used for fastening climbing equipment: carabiners, ice axes, crampons and ropes. Such backpacks are called "assault" or "climbing". Some models are equipped with special bindings for skis, snowboards and avalanche equipment.

Radial backpack- in some models "made in Ukraine" - Fram Equipment and Turbat - the flap or outer pocket is detachable and can serve as a small backpack for radial climbs to neighboring peaks. I have not seen this with foreign manufacturers.

rain cover - famous brands do not be lazy to add rain protection to your backpack. It is a piece of water-repellent material the size of a backpack, which is easily hidden in small pocket. It is less common in budget models, but you need to buy it in addition!

accessories

When choosing a backpack, it is very important to pay attention to the quality of zippers, fastexes (clasps) and clamps. Indeed, in the campaign there is not always time and mood to replace broken parts.

High-quality fittings are manufactured by the Japanese brand YKK. If the above parts are marked "YKK", then they will serve you for a very long time.

How to try on and buy a backpack in the store

The choice of backpack for hiking is done, now it remains to purchase it. The ideal purchase option is to check a specific model on a hike. Having borrowed a backpack from friends or taking it, in a few days in the mountains it will be reliably known how much it suits you. And when you return to the city, you just buy the same model in the store.

Otherwise - the backpack did not fit or did not go on a hike - take a tourist friend with you and together choose what you need. If you do not have such friends - it does not matter! After all, most sales assistants in tourist shops are people who have been in the mountains more than once. They will help you choose the best option considering your height and body proportions.

Of course, the forums have a lot of information about the selection of a backpack and a description different models. A successful choice of a backpack remotely takes a lot of time and is very difficult to do.

Examples of good models, the cost of a travel backpack

Backpacking stores offer a wide range of backpacks. Therefore, you will find enough information about them. The price range is from 2000 to 8000 UAH (100-400 USD).

Unfortunately, foreign manufacturers (Deuter, Osprey, Black Diamond, Pinguin) tie the price of goods to the dollar and not everyone can pay more than $ 200 for a good backpack. But there are several Ukrainian brands that have proven themselves well, and their price tags do not cause a shock to the buyer:

Terra Incognita- development takes place in Ukraine, and production - in China. The Snow-Tech backpack has been helping me for cycling, snowboarding and small hikes for two years. Price range - from 1000 to 5000 UAH.

frame equipment- Kyiv brand of ultralight equipment. The Osh frameless backpack is used by my more experienced travel comrades. I've been going with him for 3 months. Prices for a small assortment of backpacks - from 300 to 1700 UAH.

Beskid- Alexander Volkov's backpacks. You will get a variety of choice and quality of materials for quite fair money, and the simplicity of the design will allow a novice tourist to easily operate these backpacks. The Terskey 110+30 model has served me for almost 5 years and has been perfectly preserved even after difficult sports trips. Price range - from 1000 to 2000 UAH.

A few more domestic manufacturers - Travel Extreme, Commandor and Turbat - I often saw while hiking with other tourists. Their quality and ease of use is not worse than the above. Prices - from 600 to 2300 UAH.

Summary

Do not rush to choose a backpack for hiking and travel! The more comfortable the backpack, the more comfortable you will feel on the trip and get the most out of it.

And finally: if you are the kind of person who is constantly looking for something new for himself, then no one forbids you to have several backpacks for different types of tourism and travel;)

Personal experience - choosing a travel backpack

Of course, general information is useful, but much more interesting and useful personal experience using different models. We will share ours, you share yours - this will help those who choose a backpack for a hike.

Personal experience: Taras Pozdniy, founder and guide of "Couloir"

Hi all! To be honest, I carried a lot of backpacks. I'm not sure that I remember all the models and names, but I will try. Go.

Self-stitched backpack- Since I am a hereditary tourist, I started hiking with a self-sewn anatomical backpack. In fact, it was not much different from the current frameless ones. But it was different: with hard straps that rubbed the shoulders very much - I had to put a sweater under them, and the absence of a belt. Yes, we carried the whole considerable load only on our shoulders. And very Thanks a lot my parents that there was such a backpack, and not a “kolobok” or “easel” - it was just hell.

Personal assessment: 7 out of 10 - corrected for that time.

Travel Extreme Scout 65 and 80- that was the next step. Frameless, lightweight and comfortable backpack. Once upon a time they were made very solid and even now there are a couple of "those" scouts in good condition. There are also a few new ones bought for hire. So, in terms of strength, they cannot be compared with the old ones. Everything was reliable in the old ones, and only after a year or two of active use could fastexes and zippers begin to fly. In the new ones, everything is much worse: the fabric is softer - it quickly diverges at the seams on the straps and sides, the zippers are very cheap - it sticks right away, the "dogs" are even worse - they fly already on the first trip, the fastexes are also bad. In general, there are much more minuses than pluses. Pros - price, light weight, compactness, convenient pockets. When buying such a backpack, stock up immediately with a repair kit. Before they were reliable.

Personal assessment: 6 out of 10. Suitable for simple occasional hikes.

I grew up and the scout was already small. Since I was almost always the son of an instructor (father), I had to carry the largest backpack. We considered the 90-liter version to be the female version, but we ourselves went with 110 and 130. A good volume, where everything will fit, even a volleyball. And sometimes football. Previously, the ball was a must-have hiking accessory, at the level of the boiler. But back to the backpack. It was sewn well, not torn. It's been 10 years since then and these backpacks still serve us. Sometimes fastexes fly, but this is not critical. High-quality, inexpensive and a little clumsy - you need to be able to pack a backpack well. As for me, 110 liters is almost always too much. Worth buying at 90.

Personal assessment: 8 out of 10 - a good model of a frameless backpack.

Travel Extreme Denali 90.

To be honest, I don’t remember exactly whether it was my first frame backpack or not. Let's start with Denali, since I wore out at least three of them. These are relatively new backpacks from Travel Extreme, framed and not very expensive. In general, the first couple of trips do not behave badly - they sit well and comfortably. But already by the third, and maybe even earlier, the filler in the straps becomes caked and they begin to press. Also, by this moment all fastexes and castles usually fly. They have proven to be good backpacks for one or two trips. But who buys a backpack for two trips? From the minuses: poor-quality tailoring (threads stick out from everywhere), the worst zippers and "dogs" that I have seen, very uncomfortable side pockets, frankly shitty fastexes, a stupid valve tightening system, poor-quality materials. The pluses include a small cost and that's it.

Personal assessment: 6 out of 10. In fact, if you go hiking 1-2 times a year, then you can take it. But it is better to buy the Commander. This is such a difficult task - choosing a backpack for hiking in the mountains.

Backpack Commandor Caravan 90 - old version?

I don’t remember the exact model, but now I couldn’t find it on the site for sure. Perhaps, only on this backpack I realized what high-quality fastexes and zippers are. Everything was done soundly, firmly and reliably. Not a single problem for several trips, but I already took it used on a tip from Lesha - thanks. The only negative is the complete lack of pockets. I'm not used to this. Everything else is a plus: good straps and a belt, which after 5 years and a bunch of trips did not go astray (for example, Travel Extreme), very high-quality fastexes, zippers and locks. Thick and strong fabric. In general, there were no problems.

Personal assessment- 7.5 out of 10. Underestimated due to the lack of pockets.

Commander Sherpa 100

Another backpack of the Commander. But I liked it much less than the previous one. Mainly because it is very large and the hip belt was too big for me. I just could not tighten it as much as I would like, and because of this, the adjustment of the backpack also went astray. Zippers, fastexes, fabric - everything is at a very good level for the money. Perhaps one of the best models of large budget backpacks. I recommend looking at the Caravan 90 and Expert 75 for a smaller volume. I didn’t wear them, but I’m sure they will be good.

Personal assessment: 7 out of 10 - turned out to be great for me.

Vaude Terkum 75+10

On this moment he travels with me everywhere. Definitely the best backpack I have ever worn. For some reason, it was Vauda that I preferred the last time to Deuter, and I did not regret it. Although this time I'll take Deuter. So, the main advantage of Terkum is its incredible convenience. With him I walked around Norway, carrying 42 kg (only there were 26 kg of food, such a trip came out: 18 days, only girls and me. And you can’t overload them too much). And at the same time, my back normally endured these torments. With any backpack from the past, this would be almost impossible. For two years now, I have been carrying it with me everywhere - which means that it is in business for more than 180 days a year. And so far so good, although, of course, wears out a little. I really like that along the entire backpack there are two zippers through which you can easily get to any part without repacking all things. The only downside is the small volume. Now my tent is always on the side and it’s not a fact that all things will fit. Therefore, for the last two years I have been walking with two backpacks. Another 30 liters of Osprey ahead. And I like this scheme, because from a small one you can get a camera, map, gps and other necessary things at any time.

Personal assessment: 9 out of 10. In general, I really like the Vaudé company.

Personal experience: Maxim Khomyakevich, guide of the Kuluar club

Terskey 110+30- "Volkovskiy" backpack, which was bought in 2012. Survived numerous campaigns in the Carpathians, Crimea and Turkey.

Pros:

  • simplicity of design, adjustment and use;
  • large displacement allows you to accommodate bulky items and equipment;
  • low cost;

Minuses:

  • with a load of more than 20 kg, it puts pressure on the shoulders;
  • inconvenience of use with a small weight;
  • low-quality fittings (2012 model), which began to break after a couple of years.

Conclusion: a good backpack for beginner tourists, but I advise you to buy a model with a smaller displacement: 90-110 liters.

Snowtech 30- “Terro” model of 2014 I constantly use during radial exits, cycling and snowboarding.

Pros:

  • quality of materials and accessories;
  • additional external mounts for skis, snowboards, additional things and special equipment;
  • ease of adjustment and ventilated back;

Minuses:

    the hip belt does not come unfastened;

Conclusion: for the money and possibilities of use - an excellent backpack. I only regret that I did not buy a model with a volume of 40 liters.

A student cannot do without it, a student is comfortable with it, it is convenient to take it to work, on a short trip or hike, to nature and for sports, it is ideal for carrying a laptop, plus sometimes it plays the role stylish accessory. All this is a high-quality urban backpack. Consider how to choose a backpack for the city.

Volume

City backpacks are produced with a volume of 5-30 liters - choose based on the purpose of use and the degree of congestion. It's not good when your shoulder bag bursts from the fact that you tried to fit the unaccommodating. And when a lone book dangles in the vastness of an immense backpack, it’s also not entirely comfortable.

Back

The back of the backpack can be fabric or with a special insert. In the first case, this is a city backpack for a small amount of personal items. It is convenient that it can be folded compactly, but the back will feel all the bulges of objects, if you do not put something soft. Such backpacks, like hardback backpacks, can serve as an excellent alternative to a bag or briefcase for everyday wear.

The soft back with a special insert will help you not feel discomfort from the constant wearing of weighty things behind your back. This may be a flat sheet of foam, sewn between several layers of fabric. But it is more effective when such inserts are embossed and covered with porous material - this will allow you to better distribute the load, as well as let your back breathe.

Pay special attention to the design of the back if you need to choose a backpack for a student.

Webbing

Just like with the back, the rule applies here: the greater the load, the wider the strap and the need for a soft foam insert (but it’s important not to “overdo it” - too wide straps will fall off). Thin fabric straps are good for a shoulder bag, but not for a loaded backpack. Of course, in the question of how to choose a backpack for the city, this is not as important as, say, when choosing an expeditionary backpack, but still.

One more thing: have you noticed that the straps are different in shape and place of “location”? It is optimal when the straps are sewn next to each other on top and have a slightly curved shape.

If you are interested in how to choose a backpack for travel or sports, also pay attention to the availability chest strap fixing the position of the straps.

Branches

As a rule, a city backpack has one or two main compartments, inside of which there can be small zipped compartments and large pockets. If you are at a loss as to which laptop backpack to choose, it is not necessary to buy a specialized accessory from the same brand as the laptop. Modern urban backpacks are increasingly equipped with a laptop compartment: a pocket made of solid or perforated fabric. When choosing a backpack for the device, pay attention to the diagonal (not everyone will fit 17 inches) and the presence of Velcro or other fasteners that will fix the computer.

Additionally, each city backpack has built-in and hinged pockets. For sports and walking purposes, it is not bad if there are open side pockets with an elastic band, in which it is convenient to put water. Plus, the necessary thing is the side ties, with which you can reduce the volume of the backpack so that things do not hang out in vain. But if you choose a backpack for the city, with which, say, you will use public transport to study / work, you should not get carried away with additional pockets and laces - they will rather interfere with you during rush hour in a crowded subway car or bus.

Material and accessories

Urban backpacks are made from both synthetic and natural materials, including leather. When choosing a model, pay attention to the quality of the material and waterproofness (especially if you carry gadgets in your backpack).

Here it is worth paying attention to the quality of accessories. What's the use of waterproof material if the zippers get wet? Why high-quality material is useful if the zipper diverges, the Velcro does not stick, or the metal of the strap fasteners crumbles (yes, yes, this happens))). This is especially true for fashion backpacks, generously flavored with beautiful, but not always high-quality fittings.

If we talk about how to choose a city backpack as an alternative to a handbag or a men's briefcase, another selection criterion is the quality of the seams. Double seam, even stitches and strong threads, the ends of which are neatly hidden, are ideal. The main thing worth looking at is the absence of an obvious marriage and how the straps are sewn at the top point. It is desirable that they be deeply embedded in the backpack.

Models made of leather, leatherette or simple fabrics will harmoniously fit into a fashionable bow, while having a positive effect on your back. Your spine will thank you if you change your laptop bag for a backpack with a laptop compartment. And a standard city backpack is a thing in which you can put your uniform for training, and things for a short trip, and books for study, and tools for work.

    Cyril's answer:

    Tooting! But for that different types urban backpacks - for whom it is light and beautiful without anatomical bells and whistles, and for whom it is voluminous and sporty so that the back does not get tired of a thousand and one books or long socks :)

      Anastasia's answer:

      What if you want both? :-)
      I used to buy light beautiful backpacks for myself to put a book, a wallet and a bottle of water, but all the time it turns out that I go to the store with them, stuff them with food, as a result, the lightning diverges.
      Right now I’m thinking about what to sacrifice - beauty or practicality (or manage to combine), so the article is very timely, I will study it.
