Unconquered peaks, ski slopes, treacherous glaciers and virgin forests are ready to reveal their innermost secrets to us. They are waiting for us, but do not forgive frivolity. Sometimes even the most advanced equipment can't help if you don't choose the right clothes. Comfortable, durable, breathable, waterproof pants will be a reliable protection during active movement and during a forced stop. An oversized belt in the back area protects the lower back from the cold. Snow gaiters on the bottom keep snow out of your boots. Ventilation zippers greatly expand the temperature range of trousers. Waterproof zippers combined with the wonderful properties of the material keep moisture in. The eVent membrane, which is part of this material, has a very decent vapor permeability, which saves during active movement, while it works well in conditions of high external humidity and at sub-zero temperatures. In clothes with this membrane you will not feel after each descent, as after a bath. In addition, membrane trousers have the advantage that they can be worn in bad weather at almost any temperature, varying the combination of inner layers. A nice addition to all of the above is that trousers with a membrane eVent are not as difficult to care for as most membrane trousers - they can be washed with ordinary powders, while the membrane does not clog and retains its properties.

Choosing route trousers is not at all an easy task, especially since most of the of us supposes to wear it in the city. Pants are a more highly specialized thing. Probably, it is not worth buying a membrane for winter trips to the forest near Moscow - they do not like a fire. The mountains are another matter, where you can usually grab stormy weather for your pleasure, and the duration of the transitions without the ability to dry clothes, and heavy physical exertion, in which, without the ability of the fabric to breathe, you get wet like an old war horse - no precipitation is needed. In addition, it happens to go in a cloud, and moisture gets into all the cracks. In this case, the eVent membrane, with its high vapor permeability and moisture resistance, is what is usually not enough for complete happiness. Rain cannot penetrate the membrane, and the DWR water-repellent impregnation prevents moisture from lingering on the surface. The fabric is durable, wear-resistant and well "holds" the wind. Trouser designers have also tried to make life easier for travelers: an elastic band at the waist helps them “sit down” on any figure, and an additional tightening will come in handy when you lose a fair amount of “extra” kilograms by the end of the trip. The cut at the knees allows you to move freely even with protection, and the side zippers at the bottom of the leg make it easy to put them on the bulkiest boot. Lightweight, voluminous enough to be worn under them with warm thermal underwear trousers, while they look quite good. Try it, maybe it's just what you've been looking for.

Waterproof dry bag TT Event Bag WP for storage. Adjustment of volume at the expense of the lock twisting. The bottom of the hermetic bag is made of eVent membrane. Material: 190 T Nylon / eVent Characteristics Weight (g): XL -120 g, L -80 g, M -70 g, S -60 g Volume (l): XL -32l, L -22 l, M -18 l , S -10 l Size (cm): XL -25x60, L -24x44, M -22x40, S -19x30 TT Event Bag WP S hermetic bag overview It looks like an ordinary thin hermetic bag, but it has one interesting difference. This is the bottom of the Event membrane. As a result, the bag becomes not only airtight, but also compressible. The membrane bottom works like this: first you need to fill the bag and twist the neck. It fastens with fastex. Everything is standard here. Then you just need to squeeze out excess air through the bottom. So the germ becomes much more compact. Note. The tightness is maintained. In the water rafting, the germ showed itself remarkably well. I also want to note that the membrane bottom is better than a twist valve. Such valves on other Germans clogged with sand. On a hike, I kept in this bag a change of underwear and insulating jackets on primaloft. Ten declared liters was enough. I really liked Herma.

A snow skirt, drawstrings on the sleeves, hood, collar and bottom edge of the jacket allow you to ride in any weather without fear of getting snow in your collar or pants, and protect you from wind and cold. Water-resistant zippers combined with the wonderful properties of the jacket material keep moisture out. The eVent membrane, which is part of this material, has a very decent vapor permeability, which saves during active movement, while it works well in conditions of high external humidity and at sub-zero temperatures. In clothes with this membrane you will not feel after each descent, as after a bath. In addition, membrane jackets have the advantage that they can be worn in bad weather at almost any temperature, varying the combination of inner layers. A nice addition to all of the above is that eVent membrane jackets are not as difficult to care for as most membrane jackets - they can be washed with ordinary powders, while the membrane does not clog and retains its properties. Why it is necessary to wash clothes made of membrane fabrics Clothing made of membrane fabrics is designed to simultaneously protect against the weather and remove body fumes to the outside. Regular proper care ensures optimum performance and durability of the membrane. Accumulation of dirt and other surface contaminants, such as sebaceous secretions, sweat and various protective creams and ointments, can reduce the effectiveness of splash protection treatment (DWR), impair the consumer properties of membrane fabrics, due to a decrease in vapor permeability and, in some cases, a significant decrease in water resistance. Dirt contributes to the wetting and subsequent saturation of the upper fabric with water, which leads to an increase in the amount of condensation inside the garment. Proper regular washing of membrane clothing allows you to remove dirt and other contaminants, and as a result, restore the splash-proof properties of the fabric and the characteristics of the membrane. How often to wash clothes made of membrane fabrics The frequency of washing depends on how often and how hard you use the product. At high activity we recommend washing at least every 10-12 days of use, at low activity every 20-30 days of use. However, it is better to be guided by the following principle: if your clothes look dirty, or you begin to feel damp inside, or water drops stop rolling off the surface and the fabric begins to get wet quickly, then it's time to wash. Take care of your clothes and they will take care of you. How to wash membrane clothing We recommend using special detergents for washing membrane fabrics, such as Grangers Performance Wash or Nikwax Tech Wash and the like. Special products gently remove dirt, do not damage the DWR and rinse out completely. Conventional laundry detergents can contaminate fabric (especially those containing fabric softeners and optical brighteners), damage the DWR, and even damage the membrane. When using special products, you should simply follow the instructions on the package. When using conventional detergents, avoid using fragrances, optical brighteners and fabric softeners whenever possible. Enzymes and surfactants work well on stubborn stains, but they need to be rinsed thoroughly as they perform the exact opposite of DWR – which is why we recommend a minimum of two rinse cycles to better remove detergent residue from the fabric. Before washing, close the central zipper and ventilation, unzip the pockets, close velcro fasteners and fully relax all adjustments. Wash at 40°C without spinning. After removing the item from the washing machine, give it a good shake to remove excess water or simply let it drain, then place it in the tumble dryer. DWR recovers better when dried in a tumble dryer or oven at medium temperature (40-60°C) for 40-50 minutes. How to restore a DWR splash-proof finish DWR is a special polymer applied to the surface of a fabric to make it water-repellent. If water droplets have stopped rolling off the surface of the fabric and wet the fabric even after washing, it's time to restore the splash-proof treatment. We recommend using special fabric re-spray formulations such as Grangers Performance Repel, or Nikwax TX.Direct Spray-On, etc. After washing, fasten all zippers, hang the wet product on a coat hanger and spray the composition evenly over the entire surface, then place it in a tumble dryer or drying cabinet for 40-50 minutes at an average temperature (40-60 ° C). We do not recommend using formulations poured into the washing machine, but we suggest using spray options that allow you to easily and evenly apply the formulation directly to the outer fabric of the entire product, this is especially true for products made from hydrophilic and combined membranes.

More active body movements require more thoughtful clothing, for example, if you are going to wade through wet thickets with a backpack (you can add more heavy rain and strong wind), climb a mountain, trail a ski track - there are plenty of options. It is clear that when a person is actively moving, his heat transfer increases, and the evaporation of sweat protects the body from overheating. If the clothes do not "breathe" all the moisture remains inside, and we first overheat, and then quickly cool down due to wet clothes, which leads to hypothermia. With the help of membrane technologies, manufacturers are trying to combine seemingly mutually exclusive things - the manufacture of waterproof, but vapor-permeable clothing. It is not yet possible to achieve absolute balance, since in terms of vapor permeability the membrane occupies an intermediate position between natural and completely waterproof materials. Since Gore introduced the first membrane to the world, technology has been continuously improved, designers have been looking for new solutions and materials, and the appearance of the eVent membrane is one of the unconditional successes of these searches. This material was created by BHA Technologies USA. Without going into technical details, we can only say that thanks to the use of new technologies, eVent has a very decent vapor permeability, works well at high external humidity and at sub-zero temperatures. In clothes with this membrane, you really do not sweat. In addition, a significant advantage is that the fabric can be washed with conventional powders, while the membrane does not clog and retains its properties. The appearance of "breathable" fabrics once and for all established a clear layering scheme for clothing for tourism, extreme sports and travel: the base layer is moisture-wicking, warming and wind-moisture protective layers. Each inner layer must have, to one degree or another, "breathing" and moisture-conducting qualities, otherwise there will not be much point in a vapor-permeable outer layer. In addition, membrane jackets have the advantage that they can be worn in bad weather at almost any temperature, varying the combination of inner layers. You can wear a jacket over moisture-wicking thermal underwear and feel quite comfortable, or you can pry off a thick polar coat or a downy sweater. Thus, jackets are all-weather. The only thing worth paying attention to is the quality of the membrane, which so far can only be guaranteed by the name of the manufacturer, which in turn costs money. The only consolation is that several cheap jackets thrown out after one season are more expensive than one reliable one. eVent fabrics® technological highlights as an alternative to traditional GORE-TEX technologies

eVent fabrics®positions itself as a company, thanks to the technological developments of which waterproof and breathable membrane clothing for athletes, outdoor enthusiasts, extreme sportsmen and those who, on duty, have to operate in adverse conditions, has become more functional.

The company was founded in 1999 in the USA as a manufacturer of ePTFE membranes. Today, its activities are classified into three areas: the production of waterproof membranes, windproof membranes and membrane coatings that protect against exposure to harmful chemicals and open flames.

It is clear that by the time of its appearance, eVent was not sole manufacturer laminates in the functional clothing market. However, the company's unique technological development - Direct Venting ™ - allowed it to immediately stand out from other suppliers of outdoor membrane products and even seriously compete with GORE-TEX technologies. The eVent brand quickly gained popularity among buyers of functional clothing and equipment.

Although both eVent and GORE-TEX use the same stretched polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) as their membrane backing, they have different technologies for producing laminates and protecting their membrane layer. These differences result in eVent membranes generally showing superior vapor permeability compared to GORE-TEX membranes. In theory, this means that eVent clothing is more breathable than GORE-TEX clothing for the same degree of waterproofing. Why is it so?

Direct Venting™ is the main know-how of the company

All eVent fabrics® products are united by the use of technology Direct Venting™(DV), the so-called dry system, a unique know-how of the company. main feature Direct Venting™ means that the porous ePTFE membrane in the membrane sandwich is not protected by an additional PU layer.

But what should the membrane be protected from and why doesn't eVent cover it with a PU layer?

Without a protective layer, the ePTFE membrane is quickly contaminated with fats, since polytetrafluoroethylene is an oleophilic material, that is, it retains oils and fats. Fats accumulate in the membrane, causing its breathing properties to deteriorate or disappear altogether.

One way to protect the ePTFE pores from grease is to apply an additional PU layer to the membrane. This layer covers the membrane and protects it from the penetration of contaminants. uses Gore (excluding class products).

Another protection option is to apply a special coating to each web of the membrane. This process can be figuratively represented as the immersion of the "spatial structure" of the membrane into the paint to give it protective properties. Only the membrane is not protected by paint, butfluorosilicone— elastomer with very high chemical resistance to fats. After such treatment, the membrane film becomes oleophobic, that is, it repels fat. It is this method of protecting the ePTFE membrane from contamination that eVent has chosen, which is the essence of the innovative development. eVent fabrics®.

The principle basis of all membranes produced by eVent is the Direct Venting™ technology. According to the company, laboratory tests of Direct Venting™ membranes show that at a maximum water resistance of 30,000 mm of water column (Mullen Test), their breathability is on average at the level of 3-5 RET points, which is very close to the performance of Gore's most breathable membranes. . However, the characteristics of specific membranes based on Direct Venting ™ in terms of water resistance seem to be somewhat modest.

Recall that RET is a characteristic of the resistance that a material provides to steam passing through it, so the lower the RET value, the more breathable the material under study has. A RET value of zero is the free evaporation of moisture from bare skin. RET 30 or more is a complete blockage of fumes, for example with a layer of polyethylene.

Let's take a look at what specialized eVent membranes are.

DValpine™ and DVstorm™ waterproof membranes

DValpine™- the first development of eVent in 1999, with which, in fact, the production of membrane materials of the company began. DValpine™ 3-layer construction is used to create garments designed to keep you dry, comfortable and protected from the elements.

Waterproof DValpine™: 20,000 mm w.c. Art.

Vapor permeability of DValpine™: 22,000 g/m2 /24 h

Purpose of DValpine™

It is used to create equipment for activities such as mountaineering, hiking, winter sports, hiking, expeditions, trekking, cycling, as well as in everyday wear.

DVstorm™- on the contrary, one of the latest developments of eVent. This technology is specifically designed for aerobic activity in temperate climates. The 3 layer DVstorm™ material has a 10 den face fabric making it approximately 20% lighter and 15% more breathable than DValpine™ material.

Waterproof DVstorm™: 10,000 mm w.c. Art.

Vapor permeability DVstorm™: 31,000 g/m2 /24 h

Purpose of DVstorm™

It is used to create equipment for running, hiking and cycling, winter sports, tourism and urban clothing.

DVlite™ waterproof membranes

DVlite™ is a lightweight technology designed by eVent specifically for moderate activity in mild climates. 2.5-layer DVlite™ laminate garments are unlined, thin, light weight, easy to pack, but still retain all the basic Direct Venting™ properties, i.e. have good water resistance and excellent vapor permeability. The compactness and lightness of DVlite™ is achieved due to the absence of a lining, and the protection of the membrane is carried out by a special print applied directly to the surface of the membrane film.

Waterproof DVlite™: 10,000 mm w.c. Art.

Vapor permeability of DVlite™: 18,000 g/m2 /24 h

Purpose of DVlite™

It is used in the creation of equipment for running, hiking, cycling, skiing, as well as in everyday clothes.

Performance comparison of eVent and GORE-TEX membranes

Both eVent and GORE-TEX are recognized leaders in ePTFE membrane porous laminates. They use different technologies to protect the membrane layer, which is reflected in the characteristics of the final products - membrane laminates used for the production of outdoor clothing. This article is not intended to compare the products of the two companies, but for a meaningful choice of membrane clothing, it is useful to compare their main characteristics.

GORE-TEX® Active 23 000 < 3 RET
GORE-TEX Paclite® 28 000 < 6 RET

*Manufacturer-reported vapor permeability values are measured by various methods: eVent indicates test results using the MVTR method, Gore uses the RET method. It is difficult to make a correlation between them. In general, eVent lists a RET value of 3 to 5 for its waterproof membranes, depending on the type of product.
** In the GORE-TEX® product class, only three-layer laminate with a conventional lining is shown, since eVent does not have analogues of other membrane constructions in this class.
*** The lower the RET value, the higher the breathability of the test material.

The table above shows that eVent membranes are generally inferior to GORE-TEX in terms of waterproofing, but are noticeably superior in terms of breathability. From this we can conclude that eVent membranes are more suitable for intensive aerobic activities with high sweating, and where reliable protection from extreme weather is required, GORE-TEX products remain the most suitable.

DVwind™ and DVstretch™ wind protection membranes

eVent fabrics® wind protection technologies are DVwind™ and DVstretch™. Their general purpose is to provide comfort during active activities in the wind.

DVwind™- the original eVent technology, which protects from the wind, breathes well and removes excess moisture from the body to the environment. Garments featuring DVwind™ membrane construction keep you dry and comfortable during intense physical activity in strong winds.

Vapor permeability DVwind™:

Purpose of DVwind™

It is used in the manufacture of equipment for hiking, hiking, as well as everyday wear.

dvstretch™, like DVstorm™, is one of the latest developments of eVent, which is the pride of the company.

The innovative features of the new ePTFE membrane material are its high elasticity. DVstretch™ membrane sandwiches stretch up to 85% without permanent deformation, i.e. fully recover after such significant stretching.

Functional stretch fabrics created with DVstretch™ have made their way into the cycling market first. This was made possible largely thanks to the collaboration of eVent fabrics® designers with the Italian textile house ITTTAI-Bel Punto S.r.l.

  • The use of DVstretch™ technology makes it possible to create stretch garments that fully regain their shape and retain their performance even after 85% stretch.

If you look at the history of things, then, often, the first samples that were born a long time ago cause a smile. A wooden bicycle with a belt drive, a condom made of silk a few hundred years ago, a steam-powered car… About the same story happens with membranes, only it is written before our eyes. Membrane technologies are no more than a third of a century old, and their development continues. Indeed, the idea of membranes - to keep a person dry, at the same time preventing him from getting wet from external precipitation, is obvious in its truth. But to make the membrane such that it fully meets this request has not yet been possible. Today we are talking about the eVent membrane, which is apparently one of the best in its class today.

The most famous membrane today is Gore-TEX, which was the first on the market among high-quality membranes, and today occupies its lion's share. This is facilitated by its long history. We have previously compared Gore-Tex with some other membranes, and by far Gore-Tex is the market leader in the 2000s.

Recall that Gortex is a “hydrophobic membrane” built on the water-repellent properties of the material from which it is made. How it works? Gortex is made of polytetrafluoroethylene - PTFE - (aka Teflon), the physical structure of which is similar to a multi-layered web. Steam seeps through the web, but water, while the membrane retains its properties, does not pass. By the way, a well-known joke of "non-fans" of membranes that the membrane under certain conditions can let steam from the outside of the jacket inside! Yes, from the point of view of physics, this is possible. But the conditions under which this is ensured must be searched. The best is in the sauna.

The sore point of this membrane was its "tenderness". If the membrane became dirty, or erased with the “wrong powder”, then it stopped working. And now, by the way, it also stops after a few years of operation. Even taking into account the fact that Gortex has been modernized, and today it looks like a sandwich of hydrophilic and hydrophobic membranes.

Strongly said? Let's explain: from the inside, the hydrophobic Teflon membrane is closed by a polyurethane membrane, which works like this: it removes moisture from the skin, transfers it to the PTFE membrane, and the latter already brings the steam out. On the other hand, such a sandwich breathes worse, see the table below.

By the way, here, digressing, we note that membranes are always considered for situations when something is being watered outside, while you have to work intensively (or not very much). That is, in cases where you don’t have to strain much, but it doesn’t drip from the outside, it’s clear that the membrane is not required as such.

eVent was created to develop the idea that instead of using two membranes that correct each other's shortcomings, but generally reduce the effectiveness of the product, make a single PTFE-based membrane that can work alone. Why this membrane does not work alone with Gortex, we wrote above. Recall that it is very sensitive to dirt and detergents, and when contaminated, it begins to let water through.

eVent, developed by BHA Technologies, Inc., is not just hydrophobic, but also "oleophobic" - dirt and grease do not stick to it, it is less susceptible to destruction by detergents. Once on the membrane, oils and dirt do not change its properties. Or they shouldn't change.

The breathability of eVent is superior to that of Gore-Tex membranes, and it wicks away moisture well in both low and high humidity. At 70% humidity eVent breathes 30% better than Gore-Tex XCR and at 30% humidity 200% better.

For reference, here is a small table of tests that, alas, were not carried out by us, but in laboratories: There are two most common methods for testing membranes according to RET (thermal evaporation resistance) and MVTR (evaporation volume indicator).

RET test (the lower the score, the better)

MVTR test (the bigger the better)

2 layer Gore-Tex Classic

9,400 – 14,700

3 layer Gore-Tex Classic

6,500 – 10,900

2 layer Gore-Tex XCR

13,700 – 15,500

3 layer Gore-Tex XCR

12,000 – 14,000

2 layer eVent

20,000 – 30,000

3 layer eVent

15,000 – 19,000

Above, we outlined a certain theory of the question about eVent membranes, and then we move on to the test.
Of course, any test is subjective. Why?

  1. Each person is individual, he has his own perspiration, his own perception of cold, heat and comfort.
  2. Each person is not only individual, but also his body adapts to certain conditions. For example, in the first days of a hike, people feel the cold more sharply, sweat more, lose weight. excess weight(who has something to dump). And having dropped a couple of extra pounds in the first few days, then the body removes less moisture. It can be said that the body "dries up" after a frivolous city life "with frills."
  3. The breathability of the membrane depends on temperature, and, theoretically, at +10 one membrane may work better, and at -5 - the other. This can be established not by a test, but by a laboratory experiment.
  4. The sensations from the membrane directly depend on the clothing itself: the presence or absence of ventilation pockets on it, the lining, the cut itself.
  5. Membranes are generally not worn on the naked body. The feeling of comfort is highly dependent on what you wear under it, thermal underwear, or a cotton T-shirt.

Thermal underwear (QS (HT S U1) and Sportfull line Heavy) was worn under the jacket and pants. The test took place during the crossing of Lake Balkhash in the winter of 2010, in bad weather conditions. The weather did not allow crossing the lake itself, but apparently it was just right for the test: days with stormy wind and snowstorm alternated with warm days with rain, rain with snow, freezing rain, and rain with hail. There were practically no days without precipitation, which was good for the test.

In principle, for the test of a new membrane (almost any), the question of wettability is not worth it. If you mean precipitation outside. It was the same with eVent - the water rolled down for hours, but the jacket did not get wet. In the course of the story, we note the excellent cut of the hood of the jacket, which is no longer related to the membrane, but to the clothing manufacturer. Successfully done and additional ventilation on the body. It works much more efficiently than under the sleeves. Well made shoulder pocket. More standard things, like tightening a skirt, were also good, especially during a blizzard.

In the membrane test, the question of its “breathability” is more acute. Here eVent showed itself excellently in the temperature mode from minus 8 to plus 5. The temperature did not drop below. If the open sun was shown, and there was an area where it was necessary to “break it well”, the membrane could not cope, and additional ventilation had to be opened. To tell the truth, there is a feeling that the membrane would do even better if it were possible to make the jacket even more form-fitting. Why such feelings? Because a trickle of sweat formed around the neck, but never reached the waist. I suppose this happened because it was at the top of the back that the jacket fit snugly and absorbed better. The usual problematic place is the lower back, where even pieces of ice formed on some membranes from the inside of the jacket in the cold, in this test it was not problematic. The membrane removed excess steam regularly, without any complaints. Let's ask a direct question: were there any complaints about the membrane? Let's give a direct answer: no. A couple of times it seemed that the membrane could not withstand the rain. A thin unlined jacket directly touched the body in the area above the wrist. The hand felt cold. But every time the check showed that it was not moisture (neither external nor internal), but “ordinary dry cold”. The problem was “treated” by using thicker thermal underwear (Sportfull Heavy line).

What failed in the two-week test was to check the wear resistance of the membrane. If we proceed from the idea that the eVent membrane is a new generation, and its predecessors worked for 1-3 seasons, then it is unlikely that it will be possible to quickly get an answer to the question of wear resistance. We hope that the membrane leaves its several seasons as it should.

What is nice is that the manufacturer (Vaude) in the tags attached to the jacket recommends: "Please wash me often" - "Please wash me more often." And below he attributes: regular washing improves the performance of your jacket. This is a pleasant moment, since it is not recommended to wash many other membranes without special need, and if it is recommended, then only with special means.
For eVent, a normal wash in warm water (40 degrees) with liquid detergents without bleach or softeners is recommended.

In a word, it looks like there is a change of leader in the membrane market. We will keep readers updated on the durability of the eVent membrane as we continue to test the Vaude Krypton clothing set.

What are membrane fabrics used for?

The main goal - the manufacture of moisture-proof and, at the same time, vapor-permeable clothing?
Why are rubberized fabrics or materials such as PVC films not suitable, because they really provide one hundred percent moisture protection?

For the purpose of thermoregulation (the ability of a person to maintain body temperature, primarily the brain and other internal organs, within narrow defined limits, despite significant temperature fluctuations external environment and own heat production) moisture evaporates from the surface of the skin through the pores. With increased physical exertion, heat production increases and, accordingly, sweating and heat transfer. If the clothes do not cope with the removal of fumes, the person overheats and, as a result, gets wet through in his own sweat. Therefore, clothes through which vapors are not able to pass are uncomfortable. The use of vapor-permeable membranes in tissues helps to minimize this disadvantage. The membrane is not able to completely eliminate it, since in terms of vapor permeability it occupies an intermediate position between simple fabrics and materials that are completely impervious to moisture, that is, figuratively speaking, membrane fabric breathes better than polyethylene, but worse than tarpaulin. Thus, we obtain a sufficiently high moisture protection to the detriment of vapor permeability (breathability).

The reverse side of the medal of membrane fabrics is that, due to the ability to pass steam, absolute moisture protection is not provided, that is, under certain conditions, the membrane can get wet (leak). In this regard, two main indicators of membranes are considered, namely, vapor permeability (the ability to pass water vapor through itself) and water resistance (the ability to keep water out).

With water resistance in general, everything is clear, this is the height of the water column in millimeters, the pressure of which the membrane fabric can withstand without getting wet. The higher the water resistance of the membrane, the more intense precipitation in the form of rain it can withstand without leaking.

With vapor permeability, the situation is somewhat more complicated. The most common indicator - MVTR - Moisture Vapor Transfer Rate (the amount of water vapor that the membrane is able to pass), is usually indicated in grams per square meter per 24 hours (g / m2 / 24h). The higher this value, the more comfortable the clothes, but this indicator does not quite adequately reflect the behavior of the membrane in real conditions, since the measurements are carried out under some ideal conditions.

It is believed that another indicator more adequately reflects the level of comfort - the resistance of the membrane to the penetration of RET vapors - Resistance Evaporative Thermique. The lower this figure, the better.
For the production of membranes, polyurethane PU and polytetrafluoroethylene PTFE are most often used.

There are two fundamental different types membranes - microporous and non-porous (hydrophilic).

The hydrophilic membrane is a monolithic thin PU film, the molecules of which enter into chemical bonds with water molecules, ensuring their transportation through the thickness of the film. Such membranes have an undeniable advantage, which is expressed in the fact that they are not critical to pollution, but they are not without significant drawbacks. First, the membrane must first get wet in order to begin to remove moisture. The second is that the process of transporting molecules is rather slow. Third, chemical bonds are not unidirectional, so water molecules can be transported in both directions. In the case when the absolute humidity outside the membrane is higher than inside, the partial pressure gradient will be directed inward and the movement of water molecules, respectively, will also occur inward.

The microporous membrane is similar in structure to a multilayer web, the size of the holes of which and the high water-repellent properties of polytetrafluoroethylene PTFE allow the membrane to withstand a sufficiently high water pressure without passing it through the structure. At the same time, water vapor molecules freely penetrate through the pores of the membrane. W. L. Gore created such a membrane about 30 years ago, but it soon became clear that body fat, detergents and dirt, accumulating in the structure of the membrane (settling on the fibers), greatly reduced its water-repellent and breathable properties.

To protect the PTFE membrane from contamination, Gore engineers decided to cover it with another membrane, a hydrophilic one. The structure of the PTFE membrane is such that it allows laminating a very thin PU membrane with a thickness several times smaller than the same membrane applied directly to the fabric (as is done in conventional hydrophilic membrane fabrics), and the thickness here is of fundamental importance, because, as noted above, the process of transporting molecules is rather slow and its speed directly depends on the thickness of the membrane layer. As a result, the breathability of the Gore-Tex membrane deteriorated markedly, but was still far superior to most other membranes prior to the invention of eVent ® . eVent ® is an advanced expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane that forms a waterproof barrier while maintaining high vapor permeability.

This material was created by BHA Technologies, USA. The main difference between eVent ® and other membranes is that eVent ® uses Direct Venting and Dry System technologies, so there is no need to apply an additional polyurethane coating to protect the membrane from body exudates. All fibers are treated with a special substance (oil-based) that creates a structure of permanently open pores, to increase direct conduction and to evaporate body exudates, instead of first hitting the protective polyurethane layer.

eVent ® direct ventilation technology (eVent Direct Venting™ technology) works at any temperature and relative humidity inside. It simply draws the vapors out directly and immediately.

Test results for eVent ® fabrics in the lab:
breathability RET - 3–5 method for measuring fabric evaporative resistance ISO 11092:1993 vapor permeation resistance coefficient; breathability MVTR - 15000–25000 g/m2/24h, inverted bowl method JIS L 1099 B2 moisture evaporation rate.
Comparative testing of the breathability of Gore-Tex and eVent ® membranes was carried out at the University of Kansas, the results in the diagram:

Dynamic Moisture Penetration: Tested at Kansas State University (ASTM F2298). XCR® is a registered trademark of W. L. Gore & Assoc.

The breathability of the eVent ® membrane is 30-200% higher than that of Gore-Tex membranes, depending on the degree of humidity. The most important advantage - eVent ® removes moisture equally well, both at low and at high degrees of humidity. At 70% humidity eVent ® breathes 30% better than Gore-Tex XCR and at 30% humidity 200% better.

The well-known Swiss institute EMPA conducted independent laboratory tests and officially declared that today the eVent membrane is the most “breathable” membrane on the market.
To the above features of the eVent ® membrane, one more should be added - the composition of the substance with which the fibers are processed allows the products to be subjected to repeated washings using conventional detergents without reducing the waterproof and breathable properties of the membrane. What's more, BHA Technologies engineers recommend washing eVent® membrane fabrics more frequently to maintain high vapor permeability.

In Russia on this moment BHA Technologies issued a license for the production of clothing from eVent ® membrane fabrics only to Pyat Zvezdy, which produces clothing for outdoor activities, tourism and extreme sports under the Sivera trademark, with the right to tailor it at its own production facilities.

Konstantin Tikhonov. year 2009

The essence of all PTFE (PolyTetraFluoroEthylene) membranes is to allow water molecules to escape in the form of steam, but not to let the water itself seep inside. Simply put, this is a package with microholes. Steam escapes (membrane breathes), water does not enter (membrane protects).

The most famous PTFE membrane is Gore-Tex. Marketing is power. Everywhere and on every corner we see and read GUARANTEED TO KEEP YOU DRY. I checked. Sometimes gets wet. I have had a lot of products from this membrane.

The most mysterious PTFE membrane - eVent.

Everyone has heard, but few have tried it on themselves.

Who is eVent? How, besides the "package with holes" does it differ from others? It turns out what. This is an oleophobic membrane. That is, oil-repellent. Even easier - dirt and zhYYYYYR do not stick to it. And since they don’t stick, the “holes in the bag” don’t get clogged and the process of removing moisture goes on continuously.

Personally, I came across this membrane once. And even then, in the second tier. That is, fleece. Usually, the first echelon is Hard Shell. Storm jackets and trousers. The second tier is Soft Shell. Windproof yet breathable fleece.

I used Setila products for some time http://www.satila.ru/

This is the only company in Russia working with soft shell eVent.
This is the jacket I wore.

Well, in pants, respectively.

Here it is written about it:

I really liked walking in it then. Then the suit was given "to try" to some of the "old friends" and remained there. I'm not going to buy myself another one.

I asked myself the question: "Why are there so few products from this magic membrane?" And I decided to find out the opinion of those who are directly involved in the production of various kinds of shmurdyak about the eVent membrane.

Company "BASK"

"eVent is more expensive than GORE-TEX and several times more expensive than Polartec NeoShell. It is not profitable for us to work with it. The membranes are similar in characteristics. We work with Polartec."

Andrea Cattaneo- Mondeox Spa http://www.mondeox.it
My friend since AKU. Extra class specialist in outdoor shoes.

"Yes i know e Vent membrane.
It a membrane introduced in the market something like 10 years ago.
It a good membrane but they doesn't use a specific construction like Gore-Tex does.
It means that they are unable to guarantee a waterproofness as Gore is doing by forcing the brands that use their membrane to produce shoes by using a specific and controlled procedure.

It’s just an expansive branded membrane that make advertising for theirs characteristics but in reality is just a membrane as many other on the market".

In short, it's not technologically advanced.

Company "Splav"

"This membrane was chosen based on the sum of quality indicators. In our opinion, the characteristics are no worse than those of Gore-tex, but it turned out to be easier to negotiate with them. And it is knurled on a fairly solid foundation. Otherwise, today's fashion for thin fabrics flying apart from the look is somewhat sad ".

"Everyone has his own taste: one likes watermelon, the other pork cartilage." - wrote the Great A.N. Ostrovsky.

Splav makes two jackets and pants out of eVent. One jacket is simpler, but I liked the one that is more difficult.
