Carnival masks

Just as the theater begins with a hanger, so a merry masquerade begins with carnival mask. Feather, fabric, paper - they perfectly complement New Year's costumes.

The "birth" of the carnival mask took place in ancient times, when ancient sacred harvest festivals were celebrated. Later, in the Middle Ages, the carnival turned into a secular holiday, and masks became an integral part of it. In Russia, the masquerade tradition was strengthened under Peter the Great. Since then New Year can not do without funny, funny caps and masquerade masks.

In our online store you can buy not only ready-made New Year's masks for kids and adults, but also creative kits to create your own original mask. These sets usually include basic framework, a set of colored paints and decor elements - sparkles, feathers, ribbons, etc. From ready-made cardboard masks for the New Year's costume, you can choose any mask that suits your style - an animal, a superhero, a princess, a knight or a pirate.

Christmas caps and animal hats

Another fun carnival accessory is Christmas caps. Their goal is to add brightness and mischievous fun to the holiday. Children's carnival hats are always colorful, decorated with bells, pom-poms, tassels or horns. The fancier the cap, the better mood from its owner and the surrounding public. Such a hat will perfectly complement the image of a buffoon, clown and other funny characters.

On New Year's parties fairy-tale scenes with the participation of animals are often played out. This is where they come in handy animal hats- soft muzzles sewn from faux fur. They are more comfortable than masks.

Accessories for New Year's costumes at an affordable price you can buy in Moscow, St. Petersburg (St. Petersburg) and other cities of Russia through the Zhili-byli children's online store

But I repeat - it is easier to make an elephant. We have quite enough of such a mask that only covers the face: it’s not worth it too massive. We will make an elephant mask out of thick paper or colored cardboard.

Elephant mask - option 1

Let's take a landscape sheet and bend it along the length: the line of the trunk. Now let's count from the edge of 5 centimeters: the line of the eyes. On this line, cut out large and round eyes symmetrically.

We will make incisions to the middle of the eyebrows and at the temples. From the wrong side, slightly pinch the bridge of the nose with a stapler so that the trunk leans forward. The eyes have shrunk noticeably: that's why we made them so big in the first place! We will start the edges of the darts on the forehead a little and glue them, so that the forehead will become bulging. Glue triangular pieces of cardboard into the cuts at the temples. We will strengthen these tabs with tape, as there will be holes for the elastic.

We make the ears to taste: you can increase it a little, or you can reduce it, the color is arbitrary: the color can match the color of the mask, or it can be different. It is the same in shape: the ears are rounded, and can be angular. We wrap the trunk with a “snail”, and on the sides we glue two small saber-shaped tusks.

Here the elephant is ready.

I think the story was clear, but, just in case, here's a pattern:

Do not overdo it by playing the role of a tropical giant and do not try, inspired, to stomp those around you. The elephant is a good-natured and wise beast, and causeless violence does not suit him.

Elephant mask 2 (added later)

We made an elephant mask with you - it seems that the topic can be closed. But recently I found in the old magazine “Family and School” a picture with an elephant mask (and an owl, well, we’ll talk about it later) of a slightly different cut. How not to try what people advise.

As a graphic artist, I specialize in making masks, and designing new masks is my hobby. Clearly, I began to ponder with appetite the pros and cons of the model proposed by the magazine. Here, something was clearly required on the nose of a person, because the mask diverged to the sides (like curtains on a window), and if the edges are joined where upper lip masks warped. So I glued a false nose - and brought the roots of the fangs under the edges of this inner nose. Well, of course, she made tucks on her forehead - without this, nowhere. In general, the mask turned out to be very sickly. If I could make another wig, then in general - a mammoth!

Well, I still want to share the glory for it with the inventors from the magazine - I made my contribution.

Here, comrades, is the pattern.

Another piece of advice for ladies - stick the inner nose directly on the front side of the mask, do not suffer, turning the edges into the slot, the seams look quite acceptable and right on the elephant's cheeks. I made the tusks simply from white cardboard, pasted and slightly curled them around a pencil. That's all - voluminous tusks cannot be made, and ... it's cumbersome.

Carnival children's masks made of paper in our minds are closely associated with morning performances in kindergarten, Christmas trees, holidays, when you can become anyone: a bunny, a wolf, a bear, etc. Moreover, to designate the image, it is not necessary to completely cover the face with a carefully drawn muzzle of the beast: it is enough symbols which you can do by hand.

For example, paper chicken masks can depict a beak and muzzle. Carnival masks for children with their own hands made of paper today is not a problem at all. They can also be used for everyday role playing, and for performances during the holidays in kindergarten, and even for finger games, arrange a home theater.

What are they needed for?

Why do children need carnival masks?

Some psychologists consider theatrical performances in childhood a bad game, arguing that children learn to lie and hide their true face behind a mask in the broader sense of the word.

However, wearing carnival masks made of paper, depicting fairy tale characters, kids are not inclined to lie: they believe that they really are some kind of animal or fairy tale hero.

Therefore, handmade paper carnival masks, and in a broader sense - role-playing games and theater - contribute to the development of creative and artistic ability children, and not the degradation of consciousness. Based on them, a theater for young children can be arranged in kindergarten.

Such a theater will contribute to the development of speech and creativity. Theater can be arranged on the basis of kindergarten: Children put on handmade carnival masks and present a simple story based on their favorite fairy tales for the holidays. Parents will surely enjoy watching a small performance.

What exactly does the use of masks for children and their do-it-yourself work improve in a child? educational process?

First of all, imagination. To play a character, you need to imagine him, understand how he speaks, acts. Carnival masks, as an element of role-playing games, develop speech, making it intonation rich and varied, along with acting data, facial expressions, gestures, and movements are enriched. If you use handmade masks in finger games, then develop fine motor skills extremely beneficial for the brain. In such games, the kid himself acts as the director of the mini-performance, creating the plot of the performance and applying the skills of the logical connection of phenomena. Even an adult, putting on a mask, immediately feels the atmosphere of a holiday, extravaganza, not to mention children.

Selection of materials

How to do it yourself?

If you decide to arrange a home theater or are going to a matinee, you can make carnival masks for children out of paper with your own hands. This does not require unique skills and abilities.

If you are good at sewing yourself, then make a fabric mask by cutting it out according to the pattern, and eyes, nose, etc. make from improvised means (buttons, ribbons, shreds). If you rarely hold a needle in your hands, we offer the simplest option: paper masks for children. All of us adults probably know how to use scissors and glue. On our website, we offer you to print templates and pictures of some masks. You can also cut out pictures from colored paper. Glue eyes, nose, mouth. If you had to print the finished mask, it remains to stick it on cardboard, sew a small piece of elastic around the edges, connecting the edges of the mask. This is how you can make wraps. Wearing them, the child will be able to fix the mask on the head with the help of an elastic band, and it will not fall off. Headbands play an important role. Do not make rims too tight or too loose. The former will squeeze the head, and the latter will be too loose. Headbands should be in moderation and not cause inconvenience. If you decide to prepare a home theater, make sure that nothing interferes with the baby.

You can choose the appropriate costume for the mask. By the way, it is not necessary to buy it or make it from expensive material: everyday clothes are suitable for a suit, which can be decorated or symbolically sheathed with paper elements of a dress.

That's all. We put on a suit - and our fairy-tale hero is ready for adventure. Do not deny yourself the pleasure of arranging a holiday for your child and a real theater that he will make with his own hands. It takes so little! Just pictures of fairy tale characters and animals on our site, which make great free children's masks. Choose, download, print and play with your little ones.

Another series of children's matinees with masquerade costumes is being prepared in kindergartens again.

Parents once again have to prepare a mask for the matinee. It is best to do this with your child.

The topic of today's post is a master class that answers the question of how to solve this difficult task.

We need to turn mask making into an educational game.

The mask should be the most beautiful and cool in the kindergarten. This requirement implies an extraordinary approach on the part of parents.

Today, together with the children, we will make a mask for the matinee.

Today, together with the children, we will make masks of an elephant, an elephant, a baby elephant with our own hands.

Below are pictures that need to be printed, laminated, cut along the contour and threaded with twine or elastic to fit the child's head.

It is also possible with a strip of cardboard or laminated paper at the bottom of the mask, rolled up with a rim to fit the child's head (if you connect not with threads, but with a stapler, then the staples should be directed with sharp ends to the outside (so as not to scratch the child's head)).

To make the mask original, you need to print the black and white mask templates available here, color them with gouache or gouache with the children. watercolor paints and, also, laminate, after which you need to thread a twine or elastic band according to the size of the child's head or attach a mask to the prepared rim.

  1. How to make a mask-hat for an elephant costume on a child's head.

Part 1. How to make a mask-hat for an elephant costume with your own hands

The master class is conducted by the reader of the Native Path and participant Tatyana Dubovchenko. The organizers of the competition are the site "Rodnaya Path" and the magazine

Tatyana writes: “I needed an elephant costume. But I only had to sew at school, and I didn’t have any fabric. However, I consider myself a happy owner. sewing machine and I only have enough for toys and dresses for dolls. And so I got such an elephant. We went to the Christmas tree with him, and the thematic holiday (he was a mammoth in the ancient world) and went to the children's theater studio in Africa.

Tools and materials

To make an elephant hat for a costume, you will need:

Brown or gray sweater

Cardboard (instead of cardboard, you can use old rug for yoga or anything else that will help provide rigidity to the ears)

Running eyes (d = 3 cm)

A piece of white felt or any other fabric (size approximately 5 x 8 cm)

Elastic band 2.5 cm wide, 58 cm long

Wire (length approx. 50 cm)

Filler for stuffing the trunk (synthetic winterizer or filler for soft toys and pillows)

Glue "Moment"

Scissors

Sewing equipment (thread and needle or sewing machine)

How to sew an elephant hat for a costume

First we sew elephant mask for children on the head (elephant cap).

Step 1. First, find the right sweater. It will become the basis for making an elephant hat. I had a brown one, my daughter refused to wear it, the size is about 8-10 years old.

Step 2 You need to cut the sweater along the red lines indicated in the diagram below. On one side of the sweater is the seam of the sleeve. On the other side of the sweater, cut perpendicularly down from the neck of the sweater about 6-8 cm below the junction of the sleeve.

Step 3. Cut out the details of the elephant's ears.

From the back and front of the sweater we cut out 4 details of the ears. Ears can be drawn in shape approximately like pears (only draw a shape not elongated like a conference variety, but more round in shape like ordinary garden pears).

The details of the elephant's ears are marked in pink in the diagram below.

Step 4. Making the ears for the elephant costume.

We cut out the seal, i.e. cardboard. We make the details in the shape of the ears, but the fabric parts should be 1-2 cm larger than the cardboard inserts (this is the seam allowance). In the diagram, the fabric part is indicated in pink, the cardboard part in gray.

Instead of cardboard, you can take an old yoga mat or “tourist seat” or various packaging seals. The main requirement for a sealant is that it keeps its shape.

This is important to consider: there should not be cardboard in the place where the ear is sewn to the head, otherwise it will be difficult to sew, for this, reduce the parts from the seal by another 1 cm only in this place.

We sew the ears, inserting cardboard inside.

Step 5. We sew an elephant's trunk.

  • We take that part of the sweater that is larger in size (with part of the front and back). We tighten the elastic on the sleeve, wrap it inward and sew. Inside we insert the wire in full length and near the seam on the sleeve we grab it with several stitches in several places. Cut and secure the end (I bent the tail, twisted it and wrapped it with tape so that it would not prick.
  • We fill the sleeve.
  • Sew on some piece of fabric from scraps as a patch. The hole in the trunk is closed.

I had a weak wire in my trunk. I had to attach the trunk to my head. Here's how it happened.

Step 6. Assemble the hat for the elephant costume.

One sleeve has already been stuffed and sewn up. Along the line marked in red in the diagram, we sew two parts, inserting ready-made ears into the cap.

We turn the elastic band on the second sleeve into a fringe, making cuts and forming a brush. Here's what you get (see photo below).

Step 7. We make out the bottom edge of the elephant's hat.

Those 6-8 cm that we left (see step 2), tuck and insert the elastic. The rubber band will not be visible on the front. At the back, the elastic is simply sewn to the edge.

Step 8. Making the eyes of an elephant.

The elephant's eye on the costume is just glued on.

  • We take a piece of white fabric for the backing, it is better to take a fabric that does not crumble like felt, I took a piece of padding polyester. Cut out the oval.
  • We glue the finished moving eye for toys.
  • From scraps of fabric cut out and glue the eyelids.
  • We glue the finished eye with the "Moment" on the elephant's head. I prefer "Moment" rather than a hot gun, because. you can move the part a little to the right place until the glue has dried.

The elephant hat is ready! We put an elephant hat on the child's head. fun games and interesting performances! Tu-u-u-u-u-u, - the elephant is buzzing.

Part 2. What elements can be used to make an elephant costume for a child

For an elephant costume, you can use those items of clothing that you have at home:

  • gray turtleneck
  • knitted T-shirt or oversized T-shirt,
  • gray shorts or tights, skirt.

To create "thickness", because the elephant is a large animal, you can use a small pillow, which is placed under the child's T-shirt.

You can put gloves on your child's hands. gray color on an elastic band with a pink application. On the legs can be shoe covers made of fabric, also with pink appliqué.

Part 3. DIY paper elephant mask

The elephant mask does not have to be sewn. You can make it very simply and quickly from paper and cardboard.

Option 1 for making an elephant mask: a mask with an elastic band

Step 1. Print out the mask template. You need to print the template taking into account the size of the head of a child or an adult who will play the role of an elephant.

It is better to sketch the mask in advance on a piece of paper, try it on, measure the required height and length of the mask, and mark where the eye holes will be. And after that, print the template taking into account the given dimensions.

Step 2 Glue the mask onto thick cardboard.

Step 3 We make slits for the eyes.

Step 4 We make holes on the sides for the elastic with a hole punch. Insert rubber band. The mask is ready.

Option 2 for making an elephant mask: mask - paper rim

This is the easiest and fastest version of the mask to make and will suit everyone and does not require any preliminary measurements.

Step 1. A rim is made of thick cardboard to fit the child's head. Please note - the rim must be sewn or glued, but in no case fastened with a pin, because. a pin is a sharp object.

Step 2 Glue a picture of an elephant to the rim (see templates below). Headband - a mask for a game or for a performance is ready!
