Many parents prefer to buy knitted models for their children, because they know about the benefits of the material. In order not to be mistaken with the purchase of a children's outfit, you should familiarize yourself with the main selection criteria.

How to choose knitwear for newborns?

There are a number of rules, given which, you can purchase a suitable knitted suit or bode for a baby.

  1. During the purchase, you should take the clothes in your hands and determine the quality of the fabric by touch. The material should be very soft, completely natural. This can be seen if you pay attention to the label indicating 100% cotton.
If synthetic additives are used in the manufacture of the outfit, the fabric will irritate delicate skin small and may cause an allergic reaction.
  2. When choosing a knitted garment for a newborn, the naturalness of the dyes is taken into account. Do not buy clothes for small children bright colors. It is better to give preference to lighter tones. In such things, the content of dyes is minimal.
  3. Particular attention should be paid to the size of clothing. It should not be large or cramped for the baby. You need to buy models by size. Knitwear tends to stretch.
  4. You should take a closer look at the seams, fasteners, buttons on things. They should be on the front of the garment. This is a necessary condition, otherwise the thing will rub the delicate skin of the child.
In some branded models, internal seams may be observed. If they are very soft, almost imperceptible, then you can buy such a thing. In this case, it is recommended to check the clothes to the touch. It is applied with internal seams to your face or neck. If the skin is pleasant, then it is recommended to purchase a knitted outfit.
  5. For a child of several months, you need to buy clothes that you don’t have to put on over your head.

How to choose knitwear for older children?

For older children, knitted models should be chosen according to the following parameters:

  1. Pay attention to the label of the product, which indicates the composition of the fabric. You should choose an outfit, on the label of which the optimal proportion of the composition is displayed - 70% cotton and 30% synthetic additives.

If the percentage of synthetics is too high, then in such clothes the child will sweat, which will lead to overheating or hypothermia.

  2. The cloth of a thing should differ in integrity, and also in uniformity of coloring.
  3. Examining clothes, you should make sure that there are no poorly processed seams, dangling threads.
  4. A high-quality knitted outfit is presented without knots, bursting loops or crooked seams.
  5. Model good quality has a concise, precise cut without enumeration of decorative elements.
  6. In a special place is the purchase of knitted underwear for a child. It is worth taking a closer look at the seams. They should be very soft and elastic. Linen is chosen strictly according to the size of the child, like any knitted item.

Having some information about the choice of children's knitwear, you can purchase suitable model for your child.

Today I will show and tell How do I sew knitwear? . Sources - "Fashion Magazine" and "Burda Moden", where the stages of tailoring and the rules for sewing clothes are taken.

I'll show step by step description process of sewing tunics and nightgowns for girls from knitted fabrics.

I have been sewing for 16 years, mostly for my children.

I use at work two sewing machines - regular and 4-thread overcasting machine - Hobbylock. colloquially overlock

These are needles, STRETCH is written on the package, and an example of an elastic stitch, I have a stitch width of 1mm on the sample, a stitch length of 2.5mm.

This is a double needle, TWIN STRETCH, and the kind of stitch that it gives is 2 parallel from the front side, and like a zigzag from the inside.

The stores have a special foot for knitwear, but I don’t have it, I use a regular foot.
I want to use the example of sewing two children's things to show different ways of processing knitwear that I know. I will sew a tunic and a nightgown, one pattern at a time, but with changes.

The elasticity of the material

advantage of knitwear, you can do without darts or fasteners somewhere. I chose a model from children's Burda No. 2/2002 - a dress, p 98, but I use only a pattern, I will sew without a zipper (precisely because of the properties of knitwear), for which I slightly increased the neckline.

Cutting 1: nightdress With short sleeve, for this I shortened the sleeve compared to the magazine pattern.

Cut 2: long sleeve tunic. Shortened the length of the dress, compared with the pattern.

I also cut out an inlay for processing the neck for each model, the width is 3.5-4 cm, I have a length of approx. 40 cm. Here is the question, maybe someone knows, he will correct it, I consider it unnecessary to make inlays from knitwear along an oblique line, I do it as it suits me (perpendicular to the lobar, in a straight line).

SEWING. Important: I iron all the seams in the process of work through wet gauze, they become smoother. No wonder they used to say - the needle spoils, the iron corrects).

1. On both products - I sew shoulder seams, an overlock machine (simultaneously sews and processes sections):

Again, I do it in my own way - I sew an ordinary satin ribbon into the shoulder seam (and according to technology - an oblique ribbon). First I sweep (I have a black thread in the photo - this is for clarity), then I process it on a Hobbylock machine

2. On both products - I sew side seams, Hobbylock machine

3. Processing the neck with inlay - different ways. I'm cutting allowances!

AT THE SHIRT:

AT THE TUNIC: I measure the inlay according to the size of the neck, sew it into a ring, fold it in half with the wrong side down, tack it to the neck (with a black thread in the photo for greater clarity, but you need white - in tone), slightly stretch the sections of the inlay. Sewn on with a Hobbylock machine

The next step is to iron the inlay up and the seams down. I adjust the seam of attaching the inlay with a double line (double needle with a conventional machine), iron it:

4. I carry out seams of sleeves on both products, again Hobbylock.

5. I stitch the sleeves (first I sweep by hand, combining all the marks on the pattern, then I sew with an overlock). I iron the seam allowances on the sleeves.

6. Processing of the bottom of the front, back and sleeves. I try on, specify the length of sleeves and dresses I need.

AT THE SHIRTS - On a conventional sewing machine, I set a zigzag seam, a stitch width of 2-3mm, a length of 1-1.5mm, I process the sections, slightly stretching the fabric, bending the edge by 1-2 mm into the seam, and it turns out such a wavy edge:

AT THE TUNIC:

Photo A: I process the bottom of the front, back and sleeves on an overlock machine.

Photo B: I fold the bottom 1-1.5 cm, iron it and sew it on a regular machine with a double line (double needle). It turns out a clean wrong side, and on the front side there are two parallel lines:

Result - Shirt:

According to the same pattern, making the necessary changes, and changing the knitted fabric, from lighter to denser, you can sew T-shirts, summer dresses, if sleeveless, there will be T-shirts, and so on, full scope for imagination. For example, in the summer I sewed a T-shirt for my Mariyka according to the same principle, and before that I did it using a crazy patchwork:

This is a photo of a typewriter with a double needle inserted (sorry for the quality of the picture).

Children's knitwear, or rather clothes for children from knitwear, is the most practical children's clothing. Even a novice dressmaker can easily handle sewing a knitted blouse for a child.

To make it even easier, check out this tutorial.

pattern you can build it yourself, or you can take a ready-made one of the appropriate size from any magazine with children's patterns. Moreover, young children are such clients whose individual characteristics have not yet been identified. The figures of most children are standard.

Needles for knitwear, it is necessary to select depending on its density. For a thin fabric, needles No. 70/9 are suitable, for a denser one - No. 80/11. It is best to use special needles for knitwear with a rounded point. To hem the bottom, you can use twin needles that fit almost any sewing machine. If there is no such needle, you can do without it.

Threads We select according to the needle and fabric. The thinner the knitwear, the thinner the needle and thread.

Equipment for knitwear: most the best option- These are, of course, special sewing machines for elastic fabrics. Even the most modest household sewing machine can be suitable for sewing our knitted blouse. In this case, we grind the sections with a narrow zigzag stitch. Set the machine to a stitch width of approximately 0.5-1 mm and a stitch length of 2-3 mm. Check first the quality of the stitching on a piece of knitwear. Adjust the settings if necessary.

Important! Before you start cutting, you need to compare the length of the neck (according to the pattern) and the circumference of the child's head, taking into account the degree of elasticity of your fabric so that the child does not experience discomfort while putting on a blouse. Make adjustments to the design if necessary. For example, enlarge the neck or design the closure (back, front or shoulder seam) and allow for allowances for its processing. And only after that start cutting. In our example, a highly elastic striped knitted fabric is used.

Photo 1. Knitted fabric with stripes.

We sew blouse for girls. And since our client has luxurious hair, which are often tied in two tails, so as not to spoil the hairstyle while dressing, it was decided to make a button fastener in the left shoulder seam.

Striped jersey it is necessary to cut, achieving the alignment of the stripes along the side cuts of the back, shelves and sleeve seams. If the pattern is difficult to match, you can lay out the fabric in one layer.

We fold the cut in half, combining the strips. We lay out the patterns, combining the fold of the fabric with the middle lines of the back and shelves.

When laying out patterns on knitted fabrics, it is necessary to place the patterns on the fabric so that the fabric stretches in the transverse direction.

There is a beautiful edge along the edge of our canvas, along which we will place the lines of the bottom of the shelf, back, sleeves and the edge of the lapel of the stand-up collar.

Photo 2. We combine the fold of the fabric with the middle line of the back on the pattern. We combine the bottom line with the edge of the edge

Photo 3. We combine the fold of the fabric with the middle line of the shelf on the pattern. We combine the bottom line with the edge of the edge

If you are cutting from knitwear in which the edge cannot be used (a tight or glued edge, or for other reasons), in this case do not forget to give hem allowances the bottom of the product and the sleeves are approximately 2 - 3 cm.

Photo 4. We combine the bottom line with the edge of the edge. We achieve the alignment of the stripes along the cuts of the sleeve.

The collar is cut out from one layer of fabric. If you do not use a selvedge for the reasons above, then the collar can be designed without a lapel and cut in two layers. The technology for processing the neck and fasteners in this case will change somewhat, but more on that next time, but here we will consider a specific example.

The pattern of our collar is a rectangle, length which is equal to the length of the neck (according to patterns of the back and shelves) plus buckle allowance, and width rectangle is the height of the lapel rack.

The amount of seam allowance depends on the sewing equipment you are using. If this is a special overlock for knitwear, 0.5 - 0.7 cm is enough. In a word, the width of the allowance should correspond to the width of the seam. In our example, the width of the allowance is 0.6-0.7 cm.

Carefully cut out the details: a shelf, a back, two sleeves, a stand-up collar and two facings for a fastener.

Photo 5. Cut out parts with seam allowances. The ends of the facings leading to the shoulder seam have cut corners to avoid excessive thickening.

Separately, I note that clasp allowance depends on the processing technology. In our example, the fastener is processed with stitched facings, so we leave an allowance on the left shoulder section. backrests(this can be seen in the previous picture) and on the corresponding section of the collar - 2 cm. If you want to process the fastener with one-piece facings, do not forget to add the appropriate allowances.

We also need a strip of knitwear to strengthen the shoulder seam, equal to the length of the shoulder and a width of about 0.7-1.2 cm. We cut it strictly along the looped posts, it is possible along the edge if it is not very dense.

We note on all details control marks. So that arrows from notches do not go on knitwear, we mark control points with a needle and a contrasting thread. All points are marked on the patterns.

If you are not very confident in your abilities, it is better to pre-baste the seams or chip off in several places with pins.

We cut off the right shoulder seam (shelf and back). Over the seam, from the side of the shelf, we pin a strip of knitwear to protect the shoulder seam from stretching during wear.

Photo 6. We grind the right shoulder seam.

We process the right shoulder seam (we grind, grabbing a strip of knitwear, and overcast or do it at the same time if we have the appropriate equipment). Iron the shoulder seam allowances on the back.

We work with iron very carefully. With some types of knitwear, you cannot use a steam iron, with others, you must use a flat iron. For some types of knitwear, the iron is generally contraindicated. Therefore, we first check on a separate piece how it reacts to heat treatment.

Photo 7. On the collar, in addition to the marks of the middle of the neck of the back and front, we also mark the location of the shoulder seam.

We also pre-weave the collar into the neck or we cut it off with pins, combining the control marks, then we sew it on the sewing machine.

Photo 8 . We chip or weave the collar into the neck, combining the control marks.

Photo 9. You can additionally lay a finishing line along the neckline, which secures the seam for turning in the collar, as in our example.

Clasp processing. We sew stitches.

Photo 10. We sweep a thin edging. You can fix it with a 0.1 cm line

ironing . We turn the open cuts of the facing by 0.5 cm, tack to the main details and fasten with a neat line of 0.1 cm, as shown in the photo below left.

Photo11. We also turn the open cut of the second facing by 0.5 cm (in the photo on the right) and fasten it with a line of 0.1 cm.

We impose a shelf on the back at the place of the fastener, combining the edges of the collar and the control marks on the shoulder.

Photo 12

Bottom of sleeves. In our example, the hem runs along the bottom of the sleeve, so we do not hem the bottom of the sleeves. If in your case the bottom of the sleeve requires processing, you can do this before sewing in the sleeves. To do this, fold the hem allowance to the wrong side of the sleeves and stitch along the front side (we sew according to the basting) with a double needle or other knitted seam.

We stitch the sleeves.

Photo 13. We combine the control marks of the sleeves with the shoulder seams (with a fastener).

We sew the sleeves into the armholes (or we cut them off in several places with pins), combining the reference marks, then we sew them on the sewing machine.

Photo 14. We sew the sleeves into the armholes.

We grind the side seams and the seams of the sleeves.

We chop off or sweep away the side seams and seams of the sleeves of a children's blouse. Then we grind on sewing machine one stitch sleeve seam and side seam on the left and right side of the product.

Photo 15. Side seam and sleeve seam are ground at the same time.

The ends of the threads from the overlock should be cut at a distance of 2-3 cm from the edge of the product, and then fastened manually or hidden under the seam allowance and make a small bartack. In a word, it is necessary to carefully arrange the end of the seam, and in what way you will do this is not important.

We hem the bottom of the product. In our children's blouse, a hem runs along the bottom, so there is no need to hem the bottom. If in your case the bottom of the product requires processing, for this, fold the hem allowance to the wrong side and stitch along the front side (we sew on the basting) with a double needle or other knitted seam.

Loops and buttons. The fastener can be made on loops and buttons, or on buttons, or even on sticky Velcro tape. The main thing is that the type of fastener matches the type of fabric. On our blouse, we process loops and sew on buttons, and you proceed from your capabilities and desires. Buttonholes on the fastener can be finished before sewing in the sleeves.

Photo 16. The number of loops and buttons is determined depending on the size of the blouse.

The jacket is ready!

Photo 17. The tightness of the collar to the neck can be adjusted by the number of buttons fastened.

The finished blouse can be decorated (for example, embroidered with beads, sequins, etc.). Consider the desire of the client or do as you see fit.

MK for sewing children's knitted T-shirts!

Recently, I sewed a new fashionable jersey skirt for Arishka:

And it immediately became clear that there was no suitable T-shirt in my daughter's wardrobe. A process of fantasies and inventing immediately began in my head ... And I decided not only to sew, but also to make a photoMK.

I know, I know that almost all of my readers know how to sew and not only sew, but also create real masterpieces! Before many of them, I still have to grow and grow in terms of sewing :)) But nevertheless, I decided to post this MK, because I want to believe that not only craftsmen look into my blogs, but also those who start sewing and who have a lot of questions that I myself have recently asked and delivered all the seamstresses I know! I hope that this information will be useful to someone!

So let's get started!
1. To begin with, we need a T-shirt pattern that you can build yourself, reshoot from a magazine, or simply circle an already existing suitable T-shirt. We transfer the pattern to the fabric, cut it out with overlock seam allowances, I have it 0.7 cm.

2. At this stage, you can make a fabric or thermal transfer application. Since I sewed a T-shirt in a set for a skirt, I also made the appliqué to match. I just sewed a heart in zigzag on a T-shirt!

3. Overlock the shoulder and side seams:

5. We put the sleeves with the front side into the armhole of the T-shirt to the front side, sew each sleeve in a circle:

6. We prepare the inlay for processing the neck. To do this, we need to measure the height and length. I do it like this:
fold the T-shirt in half from the center of the front to the center of the back, while inserting one sleeve into the other. Like this:

We decide on the height of the neck (I have it 1cm), it will be folded in half + seam allowances. We make a simple calculation: 1cm * 2 (inlay) + 0.7cm * 2 (allowances) \u003d 3.4cm

Knitwear is very comfortable and comfortable. Knitwear stretches, does not constrain movements at all, which is especially important for children.

Now there is a large selection of knitwear made of cotton, that is, natural and hygienic. You can pick up a variety of knitwear: from light and thin to thicker and warmer. Interlock, cashmere, satin stitch, velor…

In general, sewing from knitwear for children is a pleasure!

And here the question often arises: how to sew knitwear if I don’t have an overlocker? And its presence is not expected in the near future. Can knitwear be sewn on a regular sewing machine?

I hasten to reassure - you can!

It is clear that it is more convenient with an overlock. But even without it, you can also sew knitwear.

Below I will give some tips on how to sew knitwear on a typewriter.

You can gradually try them all, and choose the most suitable for yourself. There are no universal methods, everything strongly depends on the knitwear itself, the specific sewing machine and the person sewing this knitwear behind this machine :).

  • There are special knitting needles for sewing knitwear. Thanks to the rounded tip, these needles do not pierce the threads, but push them apart. It is especially necessary to use knitting needles when sewing thin and delicate fabrics, which, when pierced with ordinary needles, unravel. Thick cotton jersey can sometimes be sewn with a regular needle, and it does not tear.

  • Threads are used - from polyester. Basically, now they are being sold, so finding the right thread in stores is not difficult.
  • Knitwear can be sewn with a regular straight stitch. When sewing, stretch the material slightly (so that the threads do not burst during wear). In this case, it is worth stretching only where the line will be, and not stretching the allowance.
  • You can sew with a narrow zigzag stitch: stitch width 0.5-1 mm, length - 2.5-3 mm. On a specific material with the width and length of the stitch, you can still experiment.
  • If there is a knit in the set of stitches that the sewing machine performs (many modern machines have it), it's worth trying it too.
  • Also, if the set of stitches that the sewing machine performs has an overcast stitch, you can grind the seams and fold the bottom of the product with it (I sewed such an overcast stitch)
  • Many knitted fabrics do not bloom, therefore (secretly :)), slices can not be processed at all.
  • And you can overcast the sections with a zigzag, stitch width 5 mm.
  • The bottom is very convenient to bend and hem with a double needle. From the front side, such a needle gives 2 parallel lines, and from the inside - a zigzag.
  • If there is no twin needle, you can lay 2 parallel stitches, imitating a twin needle.
  • If the knitwear is very stretchy and the parts move relative to each other during sewing under the foot, the upper feed is used. This attachment fits over the needle plate and helps move the top layer of material.
  • Sometimes, to facilitate sewing, they put paper on top or bottom of the knitwear, and sew on paper.

And the most important advice!!

Before sewing a piece of knitwear, try sewing on a small piece of the same material, folded in half. Adjust the thread tension, see how the knitwear behaves when sewing, choose the most affordable optimal way ...

And be bolder! 🙂 In fact, sewing from knitwear on a regular sewing machine is not so difficult. Especially cotton jerseys.

So, as I said, knitwear for children is a pleasure to sew! 🙂

I wish you creative success! And I believe that you will succeed!

Your Olesya Shirokova
