Video master class - topiary on the theme of autumn from natural material

It was this master class that turned out to be special: the video does not just duplicate the text version, but is a separate and, frankly, more convenient do-it-yourself guide to autumn-themed topiary. Watch, get inspired, draw new ideas and share with friends on social media!

How to make a topiary from natural material - MK in 1 picture

Step-by-step master class with a photo - do-it-yourself topiary on an autumn theme

Making roses and preparing slices

Stage 1. Pre-drying flowers and slices. It is the preliminary preparation that is the most important stage in the manufacture of autumn topiary from natural materials. To make roses, the peel from an orange is cut in a spiral, the size of the rose depends on the length of the cut strip, and the height depends on the width of the cut. For a ball d = 19 cm, the approximate number of large roses (d = 5-7 cm) is 10 pcs.; medium (d = 3-4 cm) - 20 pieces; small (d=1-3 cm) - 20 pcs.

Stage 2. Formation of large roses. For large flowers - we glue white cores of suitable size. Orange peel roses are ready - and this is just one way to make orange peel flowers!

Stage 3. Gluing the leaves. From felt sheets we cut out autumn leaves in the shape of a “fish”. Used orange and chocolate felt A4 format, the approximate size of the leaves - 1/32 and 1/64 sheets. A lot of leaves are needed for a topiary made of natural material - we cut all the prepared sheets (chocolate - 2; orange - 1).

We glue felt leaves on large and medium roses - about 2/3 of the total. Depending on the size of the bud - 3-6 leaves. Glue the lemon slices in the same way.

pot pouring

Stage 4. Preparing the flowerpot. We seal the drainage hole in several layers with adhesive tape so that the solution does not spill out. With mashed plasticine on the bottom of the pot we fix the trunk, at the same time thinking about the location of the ball: the design involves the use of a crooked barrel, it is necessary to fix the branch so that the finished autumn topiary made of natural materials does not fall on its side.

Stage 5. Filling with plaster. The abundance of elements makes the crown of the brown topiary quite heavy, so we recommend using gypsum casting to firmly fix the trunk.

We knead the solution: for a 0.5 liter pot, 200 ml of building gypsum (alabaster) and 200 ml of water are needed. The ideal proportion is 1 to 1. Mix thoroughly to obtain a homogeneous mass, without lumps. We fill the pot about 2/3. Gypsum hardens after 2-2.5 hours, but we recommend that you hold the pour for a day - until it dries completely.

For you, we have prepared a detailed article on: technology, helpful tips and recommendations. Must Read if this is your first experience with plaster or alabaster!

Ball making

We completely wrap the finished ball with twine and satin ribbons - in a chaotic manner, fixing it pointwise with glue.

Formation of the autumn crown

Stage 7. Mounting the ball. Through trial and error, it turned out that it is much more convenient to first fix the ball on the trunk, and only then start decorating the crown. Before final fixation with adhesive balance the center of gravity of the decorative tree.

Stage 8. Gluing roses. Glue evenly over the surface of the topiary made of natural materials big roses, then - medium and small, as well as whole citrus slices and halves, leaving gaps, as shown in the photo.

Flowerpot decoration

Stage 9. Composition at the base. Gypsum surface, after complete drying, is treated with PVA glue in 2 layers for better adhesion to decorative materials. For flavor, we form a layer of apricot and peach pits, fix with glue. The next ball is autumn dried flowers (we also glue the top leaves). Cinnamon sticks, nutmeg and rose, fastened with a satin ribbon, complete the composition.

Final decor

Stage 10. Finishing touches. In the gaps between the roses on the crown, we glue apricot pits and acorns (previously you need to paste peppercorns or coffee beans into them). Also, apricot seeds - 2-3 pieces - are glued at the base of the autumn tree of happiness to dried flowers.

The presented topiary made of natural materials is unique: the decor for it was prepared gradually for a whole year to be collected in the fall! Spring - orange peels; in summer - apricot and peach pits; in autumn - dried flowers and an acorn cupule. In addition, thanks to the abundance of various natural materials, the tree of happiness exudes a subtle, very pleasant aroma.

If earlier gardens with skillfully processed shrubs and trees were called topiary, today only an art critic and an erudite person will remember this. But the topiary as a souvenir tree is familiar not only to needlewomen. If you have never made it yourself, it's time to try it, and if you did, but you want something new, you can practice on flower topiary.

How to make a topiary - yes, everything is simple, stick to the universal scheme. You will see for yourself that any other master class (MK) that you subsequently meet can be easily modified.

And the general scheme looks like this:

  • The basis. This means a container, a pot, a vase where your tree will show off. Definitely, it should be aesthetic, and whether you do it yourself (decoupage, pasting, winding, etc.), or use a ready-made flower pot, not so important.
  • Trunk. And here do not limit yourself in options. What to make a barrel from - wire, aluminum cable, sushi sticks, pencils, drumsticks. In a word, from everything that can be a support for the crown, and which is easy to decorate.
  • Crown. The best base for the crown - a foam ball. Ask where to get it - in needlework stores for such blanks different sizes enough today. It is easy to attach finishing materials to it. But this does not mean that the ball should be used in every topiary, another tree can be with a crown in the form of a heart, and even a hollow heart.

That's the whole scheme. Of course, there is also decor - and this is what distinguishes one tree from another. To create topiary from flowers, what materials are not used.

Flowers for topiary: options

You can also make topiaries from fresh flowers, but this is the task of a florist who not only skillfully fixes such flowers on the basis of the crown, but also knows everything about their preparation and storage so that the topiary lasts as long as possible.

It would seem, but is there any point in making such a topiary, because its service life is extremely short - and where will it go next? But, for example, on the wedding table in the area of the bride and groom, a delicate and graceful tree of fresh flowers will be a great decor.

Options for creating flowers for topiary:

  1. Topiary with peonies. Very beautiful and incredibly believable peonies are obtained from corrugated (crepe paper). It is enough to cut the required number of petals of different sizes and form a bud. Peonies are often made, the petals in which are wrapped around a round candy. The crepe paper petals fold easily with a simple bamboo napkin stick.
  2. Orchid Topiary. You can immediately buy artificial orchid flowers, which are inexpensive. Tear off the flowers from the stem and make a crown out of them. You can make the same believable flowers from watercolor paper, having painted it in advance. How to do this can be found in the detailed step-by-step diagrams.
  3. Tulip Topiary. Tulips are also perfectly made from crepe paper, and the same round candy can become the core that forms the roundness of a tulip. Tulips are made from both thick paper and satin ribbons.
  4. Topiary with daisies. Daisies can be made from felt, and not only the yellow core will be felt, but also the petals. Also, petals for chamomile are made of white plastic bottles(from milk), or from satin ribbons. The same artificial flowers are often used.
  5. Chrysanthemum topiary. But chrysanthemums can be made from designer colored paper, which is simply cut into “fringes”, and beautiful felt cores are made.

Flower topiary can be made of paper. Commonly used in making paper flowers watercolor paper. It is denser, and on it are ordinary watercolor paints you can create beautiful shades, overflows.

Topiary flower: what can be made from dried flowers

Dried flower topiary is a wonderful reminder of summer. If you still have flowers from once bursting with freshness bouquets, you can give them a second life. Naturally, first make sure that the flowers are strong, dense, and will not fall apart during operation.

Coffee and flower topiary turns out to be very beautiful and fragrant. In this case, the crown ball is decorated with existing dried flowers, and gypsum or alabaster in a pot is camouflaged with coffee grains.

Dried flowers can be glued directly to the foam ball with a glue gun. If you think that there will be gaps, it is better to paint over the ball. For example, if you are making topiary from dried flowers in blue color, paint the bowl with blue acrylic paint.

Fabric flowers: a master class step by step

Actually, if the principle of creating a topiary is quite simple, it turns out that the difficulty lies precisely in the manufacture of flowers. Therefore, it will be more useful in this situation a master class that tells how to make the flowers themselves, for example, from fabric.

Fabric flowers step by step:

  • Take colored felt, cut out strips of fabric of different sizes from it: one is two by five centimeters, the other is three by four centimeters;
  • Fold the piece in half and make cuts like a fringe on the side where there is a fold of fabric;
  • And then start folding this segment with a “fringe” in a circle until you get such a voluminous flower;
  • Fix the tip with a glue gun, for greater strength, the inside of the flower can be glued with a circle of their felt, the same circle will be attached to the base ball of the topiary.

This option is perhaps the easiest. Among others - very delicate, real-like flowers made of silk or satin. According to the templates, petals with curved edges are cut out, which are then singeed over the candle.

Then, when a lot of petals have accumulated, you can stick a needle into something dense (the same foam plastic), and put the petals on the needle. Then sew them in place with an inconspicuous stitch.

It is impossible not to mention the option with knitted roses. Several knitted roses will make a very beautiful, luxurious crown; a topiary with such a crown will look charming in a homely atmosphere.

Flower topiary is always natural, always gentle and subtle. You can create such a bouquet on a stem that will delight at any time of the year, which you can give to a loved one, use as a prop in a photo shoot, or simply create the desired accent in the interior.

Successful work!

Examples of flower topiary (photo)

As much as we love summer, this wonderful time of the year is quickly ending. And with the advent of autumn, more and more I want to return to the season of flowering and fragrant plants.

But can this beauty be magically moved from summer to autumn and winter? It turns out that yes, and florists will help with this, creating beautiful compositions from dried flowers.

Bouquets of dried plants will not only decorate the house, they will fill it with summer warmth and a delicate, unique aroma.

However, there are people who, believing in folk omens and superstitions, they believe that dried flowers cannot be stored in an apartment or house. But is it really so? And is it possible to keep dry flowers at home? Let's try to figure it out.

Dried flowers and the possibility of storing them at home

Many amateur flower growers have long been divided into two opposing camps. In one of them, they believe that it is good and useful to keep dried flowers in the interior, and in the other they give arguments against, explaining why it is impossible to keep dry flowers at home.

And how is it in reality? Dry flowers in the house - is it good or bad? Professional florists help find the answers. But let's start with the main definition first.

So, dried flowers are plants that do not lose their external attractiveness during the drying process, from which it is possible to create decorative compositions in the future.

This plant dried material can be used as decoration in the following cases:

  1. With natural drying without strong chemical treatment;
  2. When a person has no allergies;
  3. If the composition is not poisonous and safe for children and animals as well;
  4. If plants do not harm interior items;
  5. When, after drying, the plants do not become foci of decay.

In all other cases, dried flowers bring benefits, including aesthetic satisfaction and creating a cozy homely atmosphere.

Therefore, the answer to the question: is it possible to store dry flowers at home? - Definitely yes. This should not be done only if it directly harms health.

Completely dried flowers and all the processes associated with them are dealt with by florists in a separate section, recently called dried flower floristry.

Dried flowers

Dried flowers- This is a floristic art direction associated with the creation of dry compositions, including for donating and decorating rooms.

Dry bouquets differ from living ones in that they are more fragile, but at the same time they do not need water and their storage is possible for a long period of time.

To create dry compositions in dried flower floristry, masters follow these steps:

  1. The collection of material is carried out during the maximum stability of the culture. The collection schedule for creating dried flowers is different for each plant;
  2. The collected plant material is subjected to a drying process. There are several drying methods that apply to various compositions;
  3. Choose the type of composition and select a combination of plants among themselves, based on the catalog;
  4. Dried plants are dyed to give them greater brightness;
  5. Create a composition according to the idea.

Of these actions, one of the most important is the proper drying of plants, because if the plants are not dried well, the composition will soon lose stability and either crumble or begin to rot.

Methods for drying and coloring plants

The drying process is not too laborious, it just takes time. But can dried flowers and other plants be kept at home during the drying process?

It is possible, but it is not advisable to do this in residential premises. After all, for the drying of plants, dryness and the absence of sunlight are needed so that the plants do not lose their natural color.

What are the drying methods? There are several of them:

  1. Hang drying - this method, which allows you to keep the plants in the best possible shape. To do this, cut long shoots, tie them into small bunches and hang them with flower heads down (very rarely up);
  2. floor drying - plants are dried on a newspaper or in a box;
  3. Herbarium - flat plants are dried by placing them under a press, which we can use, for example, a book or a board;
  4. Drying in bulk solids - plants are placed in deep containers with moisture-absorbing dry substances, for example, in flour or rice. This method is suitable for drying flowers with large buds;
  5. industrial drying – plants are placed in specially designed rooms and dried using industrial hair dryers or in infrared cabinets. Then such plants can only be purchased in stores, and the rest of the methods are used at home.

After drying, the plants are stained if necessary. For this use different kinds dyes.

A master class on painting dried flowers is shown in the video:

From technical processes in dried flower floristry, let's move on to compositions from dried plants.

Types of compositions from dried flowers

From dried flowers, florists are able to create not only ordinary bouquets, but also other types of compositions that will fit perfectly into any interior.

- a round decoration made of intertwined dry materials. There are two types of wreaths, one is a women's accessory, the second is an interior element. In the first case, the wreath is based on strong dried stems of plants, often cereals, and both dried and artificial flowers act as an addition. In the second case, the base is dry branches with dried flowers woven or attached to them;

directly related to the creation of compositions from natural materials. And dried flowers, created according to the laws of this trend in floristry, convey the feeling of nature in the house as much as possible. Such an ikebana can resemble both a flower field and autumn forest with fallen leaves;

Collage in a photo frame - this decor is suitable for any interior, including children's. Plants are hidden behind glass and therefore cannot cause allergies. At the same time, they are less susceptible to destruction and last longer. The compositions are created from meadow flowers and dried herbs.

represent three-dimensional paintings in frame. Plants for such paintings are chosen with forms close to natural. And unlike collages, where plants have a flat look, volume is important in this case.

The creation of panels and collages is a unique floristic technique called oshibana. In this case, the dried plant material can be supplemented with other natural elements, such as tree branches and bark, for example.

Floral postcards - these are interesting miniatures of dried flowers, fixed on ready-made postcards or on crafts made of paper, cardboard, fabric. The fantasy of florists allows you to create micro bouquets, tiny natural landscapes and still lifes that will become dear to every heart and will be kept as a keepsake for a long time;

Topiary - This is an original tree in a pot, created by oneself. It looks original and unusual.

We will describe in more detail how to make such a topiary.

Master class on creating a topiary from dried flowers

Dried flower topiary- This is a simple composition, which is sometimes created from improvised materials. To make this tree, you just need to take an old pot, a dead trunk from the forest or a dried plant stem, dry flowers or petals, foam plastic and various materials For decoration.

But one of the most beautiful master classes is the creation of an eco-topiary from dried flowers. This name is due to the fact that the composition uses a large number of natural materials.

What do you need to make an eco-tree? And you will need the following materials with tools:

  • Immortelle flowers and stem, larugus grass;
  • Dried pumpkin with a flat bottom;
  • Lace ribbon, sisal and feathers;
  • Linden bast;
  • Styrofoam ball;
  • Glue gun;
  • Sheets of paper and cardboard;
  • Scissors and threads;
  • Nippers and paper clips;
  • Gypsum mortar and container for stirring;
  • Plastic bag.

The master class is performed step by step in this way (the main processes in the photo collage):

  1. We stick a sharpened strong immortelle stem into a foam ball to a depth of three centimeters, and in order to hold the stick, we plant it on an adhesive basis;
  2. We make a pumpkin base pot by cutting off the top and gluing a lace ribbon;
  3. We create nests for flowers from bast. We wrap the bast around the cardboard, fasten it with a thread, cut off the excess length with scissors and straighten the nest;
  4. We create nests from sisal. To do this, cut out small circles from paper, crumple pieces of sisal and glue them onto the base;
  5. We collect elements for decorating a ball of feathers and a nest, fix them with half a paper clip (cut with wire cutters) in a ball, glue an immortelle flower on top;
  6. We fill the ball with elements, glue the larugus in the places of the gaps;
  7. We prepare a gypsum mortar in a container, take a bag, close the bottom of the pumpkin and pour the solution;
  8. We install the stem with the finished top and leave until completely solidified;
  9. We turn the rest of the package inward, glue it to the base, and glue the sisal on top.

After that, the composition is completely ready, and such an eco-tree will decorate any room in the house.

In the manufacture of topiary, you can use various dried flowers, not only those presented in the master class, so let's look at the catalog with them.

Dried flowers catalog

A huge variety of dried flowers will not allow to tell about them all. But among existing species you can select plants that are very loved as ordinary people and florists.

Immortelle
, which has the second name helichrysum, is very reminiscent of miniature asters and for good reason, because it belongs to the same plant family. Small flowers with velvet or terry petals and multi-color coloring are stored dry for a long time.

Because of this persistence of the dried flower, both the name immortelle and the love of florists to create bouquets from this plant appeared. Helichrysum looks especially beautiful in a bouquet wrapped in craft paper.

beautiful both live and dried. Huge inflorescences of white, green, pink and blue shades serve as an excellent decor for any room. A hydrangea placed in a glass vase or jug looks incredibly elegant.

But in order to preserve the color and splendor of the plant after drying, you need to know when to harvest it. The most suitable time will be the end of summer - the beginning of autumn, before the start of the rainy season at the time of the dissolution of the last tiny flowers from above. Such a collection will help to save as much as possible natural color in a dried plant.

- This is one of the most favorite dried flowers among florists. They are added both in compositions with fresh flowers and in dead wood. In addition, lavender has many types and retains its aroma even after drying.

Bouquets of dry lavender are loved by many people, but lavender in combination with various dried flowers in a hat box or a wooden envelope will look original and not beaten.

Another interesting option the use of lavender in floristry is a hedge in a garden or front garden. For such a fence, annual or perennial tall plant varieties are taken, and then planted. At the end of the flowering season, the lavender color will be lost, but the plant will look good until spring.

In the spring, the annual dried flower can be replaced with other plants. And the dry perennial lavender will come to life again after the winter, and in the future its flowers can be cut for drying.

- ornamental grass with a fluffy inflorescence at the end. In the common people, a haretail is called precisely because of its appearance, reminiscent of the fluffy tail of an eared hare.

Spikelets of larugus are easy to color, so florists often use the plant when creating bouquets and decorating.

in many ways an unusual plant and is considered a religious flower. But nevertheless florists consider it good stuff to create many compositions.

The flower itself is quite large and consists of a seed box and petals. But it is not always possible to see the whole bud in a bouquet. Although completely it will look great, and especially if it is painted.

For the most part, masters use a seed box to create floral compositions. The reason for this choice lies in the large and interesting form, which becomes the centerpiece of any bouquet of dried flowers. Lotus surrounded by lavender, lagurus and wheat is very attractive.

being a medicinal plant, even after drying, it does not lose its properties. The plant is able to disinfect the air. That is why in the cold season and in winter, bouquets of yellow inflorescences can not only please the eye, but also benefit.

Tansy looks elegant in beautifully framed mono-bouquets or compositions with meadow herbs. In addition, the golden color of the plant allows it to be added to any bouquets without violating their harmony as a whole.

- this flower with a delicate bud and beautiful appearance, which even when dry retain their charm and charm.

Many women, and especially brides after the wedding, dream of keeping bouquets of these flowers. And despite the old and stupid sign that it is bad and harmful, many people keep these enchanting bouquets for years.

Florists, unlike everyone else, are able to use not only the flower as a whole, but also its other parts as a composite material. This is how rose petals are used to create compositions on panels, man-made roses or flowers of unusual shapes.

- This is a plant with a fairly long flowering period, which, depending on the color, has received the second name limonium or sea lavender. Small inflorescences stand out with a fringed shape and are well suited for creating a composition of dried flowers.

Limonium is the easiest to dry compared to other flowers. It is enough to put it in a vase without water, and after a short amount of time it will become dry.

Most of all, the statice is suitable for creating winter bouquets. These plants create a wonderful arrangement of flowers in a bouquet, largely due to the wide blue-violet range.

- This is an ornamental herbaceous plant with beautiful bright red or orange fruits. It is thanks to the beautiful fruit boxes that the plant is dried and used in decoration.

Outwardly, they resemble small copies of Chinese lanterns, which warm with their warmth. Therefore, physalis floristic compositions will bring bright accents to the interior and fill it with a festive atmosphere.

- an unusual plant is not with its flowers, but with a seed head that opens after the flower petals fall off. These fluffy balls look incredibly attractive in a bouquet, and you just want to touch them. They give any bouquet originality and playfulness.

The autumn landscape is extremely mesmerizing. Colorful leaves, last flowers and herbs still delight with their presence and diversity. The harvest of orchards brings satisfaction to their owners. Mushrooms and autumn berries call for a quiet hunt. But soon all this splendor will have to part. However, there is a way out!

A do-it-yourself topiary made from natural material will help to keep a piece of golden autumn not only in memory, but also decorate any interior, bring a touch of comfort to a home stop.

Topiary from natural material "Indian Summer"

“Indian Summer”, this is the name of an unusual autumn topiary, which is easy to make with your own hands.

The crown is decorated with autumn plants: dried immortelle flowers, haretail and lagurus plants. Bast and feathers are also used.

The tree trunk is made using helichrysum.

The pot is a decorative dried gourd.

Besides:

  • foam ball;
  • lace;
  • PVA and helium glue.
  • plaster, pins or regular paper clips, scissors;
  • thread, cardboard, two sheets of paper.

Do-it-yourself steps for making the autumn topiary "Indian Summer":

  1. First you need to fix the trunk. To do this, slightly sharpen the barrel and stick it into the foam ball inside not three centimeters to form a hole into which then pour glue and glue the ball to the barrel.
  2. Now you need to start making the pot.
  3. At the dried-up decorative pumpkin, you need to saw off the top, remove the seeds and decorate with cotton lace using PVA glue.
  4. After that, you should start making decorative elements that will decorate the crown.

Flowers must be fixed in bast and sisal nests, which are made as follows:

  • We wind the lyko on cardboard and tie it with a thread, then the cardboard should be removed and the fibers should be stratified, giving the shape of a nest.
  • We tear off the sisal in pieces and stick it on pre-cut circles, making it into the shape of a nest.

Feathers white color should be colored with tea.

When the decorative material is ready, you can start decorating the crown.

  1. We fix the feathers.
  2. Nests.
  3. Attach a flower.

Thus, you need to fill this entire ball. Unclosed places are sealed with lagurus.

Our miracle - we begin to plant a tree in a pumpkin pot.

For this:

  • you need to turn the gypsum into a creamy mass with the help of water;

MASTER CLASS FOR MANUFACTURING TOPIARY "Autumn bouquet"

Author of the work: Rybalkina Evgenia Ivanovna, teacher of MDOU Matreno-Gezovsky kindergarten, Belgorod region, Alekseevsky district, village of Matreno-Gezovo

Application: the possibility of making a gift or decorating the interior.

Description: this master class is designed for teachers, educators, older students and parents.

Target: making a topiary from dried flowers and sheets, creating beauty around yourself, the ability to realize yourself creatively.
Tasks: - to give the necessary concepts and the sequence of work on the manufacture of topiary;
- to form and develop artistic taste, accuracy and attention;
- develop skills to work with natural material, teach the selection of material for the implementation of topiary.

Equipment and materials:
Decanter, dry rose flowers, dry leaves, adhesive tape, scissors, corrugated paper, glue gun, beads of different sizes and colors, wire, glue stick, knitting threads.

We measure the wire of the desired length (I have somewhere around 25-30 cm), you need 3 pcs. From color corrugated paper we cut the strips and wrap our wire (in my case, I took: gold, light green and pink; I smeared the end of the corrugated paper with glue for better fastening with the wire)

We fasten three colored wires to each other with adhesive tape. We wrap the light green and pink wire around the gold one (because my pink wire broke when it was bent - the idea changed - that's what happened)

We prepare a mixture of gypsum and manganese (in my case, the decanter is a transparent, slightly purple color).

Pour it into a decanter.

We put our wire blank. We leave to freeze.

We proceed to the next stage of work. We make a ball out of newspaper and colored paper for printing, wrap it with tape and thread.

Let's start decorating the ball. By using glue gun glue dried roses and flowers from dry leaves. From wrapping paper we make balls and glue to our workpiece.

We glue the whole ball with dry flowers and flowers from dry leaves. On the bottom of the ball, I glued dry sheets of roses and a square of light green wrapping paper(size 20*20cm.)

We attach the finished ball to our decanter. To better fix the ball to the wire, you need to: make a hole in the ball below with a knife and pour glue into this hole.

We decorate our topiary with beads, decorate the decanter with small dry roses. Here's what we got.
